Jake Irvin battles control issues ahead of a difficult matchup against the Braves

Irvin continues to struggle with command since returning from the injured list, logging a 5.93 ERA and 1.60 WHIP over his last five starts. In his most recent outing, he labored through 94 pitches in just 4.1 innings while issuing six walks for a fourth-place Nationals squad sitting at 65-74. Despite working through elevated pitch counts, he remains entrenched as a regular starter in Washington's injury-depleted rotation.

His 5.59 ERA and 1.40 WHIP through 17 starts this season mirror his struggles from last year, demonstrating that his ratio troubles are legitimate rather than bad luck. Although our season projection anticipated a 4.95 ERA, his inability to work efficiently has suppressed his fantasy floor. Without improved zone control, his modest strikeout output cannot compensate for the heavy traffic on the basepaths.

Irvin is scheduled for one start this week at home against an Atlanta lineup riding a seven-game winning streak. Our projections anticipate a bumpy ride, forecasting a 5.86 ERA and 1.64 WHIP over five frames. Given the difficult matchup and his ongoing walk issues, fantasy managers should look elsewhere for pitching help. Sit.
