Francisco Alvarez | Fantasy Outlook

Francisco Alvarez is finding consistency at the plate despite a recent power drought

Alvarez is swinging a hot bat, posting a .320 average over his last 14 days and a respectable .278 mark over the past month. He is the primary backstop for a fifth-place Mets squad currently sitting at 40-57 and looking to find some offensive identity amid several team injuries. Having fully recovered from early-season meniscus surgery, he is the undisputed everyday option behind the plate.

His recent contact rate is well above our .236 season projection and his career averages, suggesting some regression in batting average may be coming. However, while he has not homered in the last two weeks, his power is his greatest asset; with nine home runs already this year, he is just one shy of our original season projection. The underlying metrics suggest his current high-contact floor is making him a much more reliable fantasy asset than in years past.

The Mets finish the week with a three-game road series against the Phillies. Alvarez gets a particularly enticing matchup today against Aaron Nola, who has struggled significantly this season with a 5.89 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. While Jesus Luzardo presents a tougher test on Saturday, the hitter-friendly environment in Philadelphia and Alvarez's improved approach make him a locked-in option. Start.
