Jacob Young's Power Spurt Cools Off, But Speed Remains a Major Factor in Washington's Outfield

Jacob Young remains the everyday starting center fielder for the third-place Washington Nationals (35-34). While he grabbed headlines with an unexpected spring power surge, his bat has cooled. Over the last seven days, Young hit just .235 but salvaged his fantasy value by swiping two bags and scoring four runs. He appears fully recovered from a mid-May rib injury and continues to play a vital everyday role.

Do not expect his early-season power surge to last; Young hit five home runs over the last 30 days, which is highly uncharacteristic for a player with just five career home runs entering this season. Our models project a .244 rest-of-season average and only three more home runs. However, his elite speed is entirely real, making him a reliable source of stolen bases even as his slugging metrics regress to his career baseline.

Washington has three home games remaining this week against Seattle. Young faces incredibly tough matchups against Bryce Miller (1.33 ERA) and Emerson Hancock (2.74 ERA), though Saturday's game against Luis Castillo (5.16 ERA, 1.34 WHIP) offers a brief reprieve.
