Colson Montgomery's elite power surge is carrying the first-place White Sox despite contact struggles

Montgomery is providing massive power from the shortstop position, recently clobbering his 21st home run of the season to help keep the first-place White Sox atop the AL Central with a 45-40 record. While he dealt with minor back tightness in early June, he is firmly entrenched as the everyday shortstop and has been healthy of late. However, the contact profile is concerning, as he has struck out 21 times over his last 14 days while batting just .196 in that span.

Despite the low batting average recently, Montgomery’s power is no fluke, as he has already matched his 2025 home run total in nearly 150 fewer at-bats. Our data shows he has already surpassed our original season projections for home runs, making him a true breakout candidate in the slugging categories. While his current .221 season average is a slight drag, his ability to provide elite power from a middle infield spot makes him a high-end fantasy asset if he can stabilize his strikeout rate.

The White Sox finish their week with a four-game series against division rival Cleveland. Montgomery faces a mix of matchups, starting with Slade Cecconi and his 4.30 ERA, which offers a prime opportunity to add to his home run tally. The difficulty ramps up over the weekend against Parker Messick (2.92 ERA) and Tanner Bibee (3.69 ERA), but Montgomery’s penchant for monster home runs makes him a must-start regardless of the opponent's ratios.
