Griffin Canning | Fantasy Outlook

Injuries cement Canning's rotation spot, but volatile ratios limit his standard-league viability

Griffin Canning has secured his place as a mid-rotation staple for San Diego, primarily due to a depleted starting rotation that has lost key arms like Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove to long-term injuries. Slotting in as the number two starter on the depth chart, the 30-year-old veteran has plenty of opportunity to eat innings. However, durability questions remain, especially after an early-season injured list stint delayed his Padres debut until May.

From a categorical perspective, our projections expect Canning to deliver around 125 innings with 95 strikeouts, a 4.46 ERA, and a 1.36 WHIP over the course of the season. While his strikeout rate remains respectable, his high walk rate (currently averaging over five walks per nine innings in his brief 2026 campaign) makes him a substantial liability for fantasy managers attempting to maintain clean pitching ratios.

Ultimately, Canning is a high-risk, moderate-reward option who is best utilized as a streaming candidate in favorable matchups rather than a permanent fixture on fantasy rosters. He provides decent strikeout depth for deeper formats but his lack of draft-day pedigree and high ratio volatility make him an easy pass in shallow, 10-team leagues.
