Dennis Santana occupies a middle-relief depth role in Arizona's bullpen

Santana has thrown just 2.2 innings over the past month, registering three strikeouts and a 0.91 WHIP across three appearances. After being designated for assignment by Pittsburgh in late July, the veteran right-hander joined a 69-62 Diamondbacks club battling in the wild-card race. With Arizona navigating multiple pitching injuries, Santana is functioning purely as middle-relief depth behind late-inning arms Brandyn Garcia and Kevin Ginkel.

After a stellar 2025 campaign where he posted a 2.32 ERA, Santana struggled earlier this year with a 6.32 ERA and 1.57 WHIP across 47 appearances. Although our rest-of-season projections anticipate positive regression toward a 3.76 ERA, his shaky command makes a sudden rebound into high-leverage situations improbable.

The Diamondbacks face an eight-game week against the Cubs and Giants, highlighted by a Saturday doubleheader in San Francisco. Our models project roughly two innings of work with modest strikeout upside and minimal save or hold chances. Sit.
