Dennis Santana is searching for consistency in high-leverage spots as the Pirates bullpen battles injuries

Santana has maintained a high strikeout rate lately, fanning 8 batters over 6.1 innings during his last 14 days of work. While his recent 5.90 ERA is inflated, he remains a key figure in the bullpen for a 47-46 Pirates squad currently in fourth place in the NL Central division. With several relievers like Chris Devenski and Evan Sisk currently on the injured list, Santana continues to slot in as a primary high-leverage option for the club.

Under the hood, Santana is struggling to replicate the career-best 2.32 ERA he posted in 2025, as he currently sits with a 5.50 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP this year. Despite the poor ratios, our projection expects him to trend toward a 3.76 ERA by year's end, and his current 11.80 K/9 over the last two weeks is a very positive indicator. While his save opportunities have been scarce lately, our models suggest he still has the potential to factor into the closing mix.

Looking ahead, the Pirates conclude their series with Atlanta before hosting the division-leading Brewers for a three-game weekend set. Santana already took a loss this week against Atlanta on July 8 and faces a daunting weekend matchup against Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski, who boasts a dominant 1.62 ERA. Given the current ratio risk and the difficult remaining matchups this week, he is a risky play in standard formats. Sit.
