Zac Gallen returns from the injured list on a pitch limit as Arizona pushes for a wild-card berth

Gallen returned from the 60-day injured list on Wednesday after missing extended time with right elbow inflammation, taking the loss against Kansas City. The right-hander was restricted to 68 pitches, surrendering one run on four hits and two walks with a single strikeout over 3.1 innings. Rejoining the back of the rotation, he provides rotation depth for a 78-69 Diamondbacks squad sitting just a half-game out of a wild-card spot.

His abbreviated start mirrors a difficult 2026 campaign where Gallen owns an uncharacteristic 6.68 ERA and 1.63 WHIP across 98.3 innings. Our projections foresaw a solid 4.14 ERA, but a sharp downturn in missing bats (5.68 K/9) confirms that his struggles this season are not merely bad luck. Without fully built-up stamina and consistent command, his fantasy value remains severely compromised.

Because Gallen started on September 9 against the Royals, he is not scheduled for another appearance during Arizona's weekend home series against Texas. With his scoring locked for the remainder of this matchup period, fantasy managers should keep him benched until he stretches out his pitch count and shows restored velocity. Sit.
