Dominic Smith experiences a mid-summer power outage as early-season breakout cools

Smith has hit a wall lately, slashing just .154/.267/.192 over his last 14 days while failing to record a home run. He remains the primary designated hitter for the first-place Braves, who lead the NL East with a 55-40 record. Despite the slump, his role is solidified by a flurry of team injuries to outfielders like Mike Yastrzemski and Ronald Acuña Jr., which leaves Atlanta reliant on Smith's veteran presence in the middle of the order.

His early-season dominance—at one point leading the league in average against fastballs—has given way to significant regression, as his .200 average over the last 30 days is more in line with our models' conservative expectations. While his .262 season average remains respectable, the lack of home run volume is concerning for a player limited primarily to DH duties. He is unlikely to recapture his April magic and should be viewed as a fringe batting average asset moving forward.

Atlanta faces a light schedule to finish the week with only three remaining games at home against the Rangers. Given the limited game volume and Smith’s current 1-for-7 stretch over the past seven days, there is very little incentive to keep him in active lineups for this scoring period. While the first-place Braves are riding a one-game win streak, Smith's personal production is too cold to trust in utility spots. Sit.
