Carlos Estevez remains sidelined indefinitely following recurring shoulder setbacks

The State of the Union for Estevez is unfortunately centered on the trainer's room rather than the mound, as he remains on the 60-day injured list. After suffering a foot contusion in March, his recovery was further derailed by a right rotator cuff strain and a subsequent exit from a Triple-A rehab assignment due to renewed shoulder discomfort. The last-place Royals, currently sitting at 38-59, have moved forward with Lucas Erceg as the primary closer while Estevez remains in the early stages of a very slow throwing progression.

Looking under the hood, this season has been a total loss compared to our projection of 12 saves and a 3.96 ERA. Following a dominant 2025 campaign where he notched 42 saves with a 2.56 ERA, the veteran's velocity dip and persistent shoulder issues suggest significant regression or a lengthy ramp-up period if he returns at all this year. Given the recurring nature of his shoulder discomfort, fantasy managers should not expect him to replicate his career-best strikeout-to-walk ratios anytime soon.

The Royals face a three-game home stand against the Padres this weekend, with San Diego sending Michael King and his solid 3.40 ERA to the hill. Although our weekly models maintain a baseline projection for Estevez, his placement on the 60-day IL through mid-August guarantees he will not see the field during these matchups or the following road trip. With the team focusing on youth and Estevez still unable to maintain health in Triple-A, he is a clear Sit in all formats and a safe drop in redraft leagues. Sit.
