Michael Busch maintains plate discipline despite recent contact struggles

Michael Busch continues to serve as the everyday starter at first base for the second-place Cubs, who are currently enjoying a four-game win streak. While our data shows he launched his ninth home run of the season earlier this week, his batting average has cooled significantly to .178 over the last 14 days. Despite these contact issues, his 10 walks over that same period demonstrate the strong plate discipline that has kept his role secure in the heart of the order.

Comparing his current form to our projection of 15 home runs and a .247 average, Busch is actually overperforming in the power department relative to our mid-season expectations. While he hasn't yet replicated the elite power heights of his 38-homer 2025 campaign, his .373 on-base percentage this year is a career-high mark. We expect his batting average to stabilize toward his career baseline as his recent strikeout surge eventually subsides.

The remainder of the week offers a brutal schedule as the Cubs travel to Milwaukee to face a collection of high-caliber arms. Busch is slated to face Jacob Misiorowski, Kyle Harrison, and Brandon Woodruff, all of whom are currently pitching to ERAs of 2.50 or better with elite WHIP marks. Facing three consecutive aces while in a 4-for-26 slump over the last week makes him a difficult play in most formats. Verdict: Sit.
