Javier Assad | Fantasy Outlook

Javier Assad remains confined to long relief for the contending Cubs

Assad has scuffled out of the bullpen over the past two weeks, posting a 5.63 ERA and 2.19 WHIP while yielding seven hits across 3.2 innings. Currently serving as Chicago's primary long reliever, he has seen sporadic high-traffic duty while the second-place Cubs (87-69) ride a two-game winning streak into postseason positioning.

His late-season struggles contrast with a dependable 3.86 ERA and 1.24 WHIP across 86.1 innings this year, which aligns nicely with our projected 3.80 ERA baseline. Still, without consistent rotation turns and carrying a modest 6.26 K/9 strikeout rate, his ability to provide meaningful fantasy production is severely capped.

Looking ahead, the Cubs line up six games against Miami and Boston, but Assad is not slated for a start as the rotation remains locked in with Kevin Gausman and Shota Imanaga leading the charge. Our models project zero starts and negligible volume for Assad this week, giving him virtually zero fantasy utility. Sit.
