Jackson Merrill flashing improved plate discipline and elite speed during July surge

Merrill has looked comfortable at the plate lately, slashing .286/.355/.286 over the last seven days while maintaining his role as the everyday center fielder. He is a defensive anchor for a third-place Padres team that sits at 48-48 and remains squarely in the Wild Card hunt. With depth options like Ramon Laureano out for the season, Merrill’s volume remains safe, though the team is leaning on his glove as much as his bat during this stretch.

While his .219 season batting average is a significant step back from his .290 rookie campaign, there are signs of growth under the hood. He has already swiped 19 bases this year, nearly doubling our preseason projection of nine, showing a newfound aggressiveness on the paths. Our models expect his average to trend closer to his .269 season projection, especially considering he has maintained a much improved .257 mark over his last 28 games.

Looking at the week ahead, the Padres have a light schedule with just three games on the road against the Royals starting Friday.
