Brandyn Garcia locks down high-leverage innings as Arizona's primary closer

Garcia has been untouchable lately, firing 4.2 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and a 0.71 WHIP over his last five appearances. The second-place Diamondbacks (74-67) have leaned heavily on the 26-year-old lefty in high-leverage spots, especially with fellow relievers Ryan Thompson and A.J. Puk sidelined on the 60-day injured list. While manager Torey Lovullo continues to employ a matchup-based approach for ninth-inning duties, Garcia currently sits atop the bullpen hierarchy as the primary closer.

This stellar run represents a genuine breakout rather than a flash in the pan, as Garcia boasts a 2.59 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 49 strikeouts over 34.7 innings this season. That dominance crushes our preseason expectations, which projected a 4.09 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. Backed by a 12.7 K/9 and sharp command, his ability to generate swings and misses makes his elite ratios sustainable for the fantasy stretch run.

Arizona has an off-day Thursday before heading into a three-game weekend series against the AL West-leading Astros in Houston. Coming off a clean two-strikeout frame against the Phillies on Wednesday, Garcia is well-rested and primed for late-inning work in tight contests.
