Mattias Samuelsson | Fantasy Outlook

Samuelsson brings peripheral stability into home date vs. Blackhawks

Mattias Samuelsson and the Buffalo Sabres host the Chicago Blackhawks tonight at KeyBank Center for their regular-season home opener. Samuelsson wasted no time making an impact in his return from a preseason lower-body injury, scoring Buffalo's first goal of the 2026-27 campaign on Thursday against Columbus while logging over 18 minutes of ice time. That productive outing helped push his fantasy start rate up to 57%. Buffalo enters tonight as a clear home favorite in what projects as a higher-scoring matchup against a winless Chicago squad (0-2). The Blackhawks are expected to start Spencer Knight (unconfirmed) in goal, providing Buffalo an advantageous setup to claim their first victory.

Our projections target Samuelsson for ~0.5–1.0 point, ~1–2 shots on goal, and 2.8 fantasy points tonight. Without power-play deployment on Buffalo's top units, his primary fantasy value stems from steady physical contributions, with our data projecting ~2 hits and ~1–2 blocked shots against Chicago's forwards. Tonight marks the second and final game of Buffalo's two-game opening week schedule, wrapping up his weekly utility after a 2.2 fantasy point baseline across the pair of contests. While his scoring ceiling remains capped by his defensive role, his stable top-pairing minutes and high floor make him a viable active defenseman. Today’s action: Cautious Start.
