Soriano's early-season magic fades as control issues lead to heavy mid-season regression

Soriano has hit a significant wall, posting a bloated 6.38 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over his last five starts. He continues to serve as the staff anchor for a struggling Angels squad that currently sits in fifth place in the AL West with a 38-59 record. His most recent outing was particularly alarming for fantasy managers, as he managed to throw five innings against his opponents without recording a single strikeout.

The historic 0.24 ERA Soriano carried through April has officially vanished, as his season marks have regressed to a 3.64 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. This correction aligns almost perfectly with our data, which projected him to hover around a 3.83 ERA for the year. His primary struggle remains command, as his walk rate has spiked while his ability to generate swings-and-misses has dipped significantly compared to his elite early-season form.

The Angels host the Tigers this weekend, but the matchups look incredibly difficult for the home side. Detroit is slated to start Troy Melton, Tarik Skubal, and Casey Mize, all of whom enter the series with ERAs of 3.09 or lower and WHIPs near 1.00. Given Soriano's recent inability to miss bats and the high-quality pitching he's matching up against, he is a risky proposition for your rotation. Sit.
