Tyler Tolbert’s historic hot streak cools off as he fills in for the Royals

Tolbert recently made headlines by tying an MLB record with 12 consecutive hits, but he has since cooled off with an 0-for-4 mark over the last seven days. He is currently the primary backup at shortstop and a utility option for a fifth-place Royals squad that sits at 40-60. His path to playing time looks clearer this week with superstar Bobby Witt Jr. currently listed as questionable due to back tightness, which could keep Tolbert in the starting lineup.

While his .345 season batting average and incredible .432 mark over the last 30 days are sensational, our models expect significant regression toward a .223 baseline. However, his speed is an undeniable asset; with 11 stolen bases in just 36 games, he has already surpassed our season projection of nine steals. His ability to impact the running game makes him more than just a fluke, even if his hit-per-at-bat rate stabilizes.

Kansas City has a full seven-game schedule this week, starting with a very favorable home series against San Francisco. Tolbert will face Trevor McDonald and Tyler Mahle, who both carry ERAs over 5.20, providing a great chance to restart his hit streak. The road trip to Detroit is much more difficult, featuring matchups against Troy Melton (1.80 ERA) and Tarik Skubal (2.83 ERA). If Witt Jr. remains out, Tolbert is a must-add for speed-needy managers. Hold.
