Hurston Waldrep | Fantasy Outlook

Hurston Waldrep building up in rehab; late June return in sight for division-leading Braves

Waldrep has not appeared in a major league game this season as he continues his recovery from elbow surgery. However, he recently began a rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League, tossing two scoreless innings on June 2. The first-place Braves (46-25) currently have him on the 60-day injured list, pointing toward a late June return to help an injury-depleted rotation.

When healthy, the young right-hander possesses notable mid-rotation upside, highlighted by a strong 3.09 ERA and 51 strikeouts across 49.5 innings last season. Our models project a 4.34 ERA and 1.37 WHIP over 137.0 projected innings for the season, though command issues could limit his efficiency. Still, his high strikeout upside makes him a premier stash candidate with Spencer Strider sidelined.

Atlanta hosts the Giants and Brewers for six games this week starting June 16, but Waldrep will spend the entire period continuing his minor-league build-up. He remains on track to rejoin the big-league pitching staff in late June or early July. Leave him parked in your injured list slot for now. Weekly Verdict: Sit.
