AJ Smith-Shawver begins rehab assignment as he works back from the injured list
Smith-Shawver has spent the season on the 60-day injured list but took a major step forward by starting a rehabilitation assignment with Single-A Augusta on June 30. The first-place Braves, who currently lead the NL East with a 52-36 record, are being careful with the young right-hander's recovery. His progression is vital for a team that has faced significant depth challenges in the rotation following injuries to multiple starters.
In his last full season of action in 2025, Smith-Shawver showcased his potential with a 4.00 ERA and 42 strikeouts over 42.7 innings. Our models project a cautious return once he is activated, expecting an ERA around 4.50 with roughly a strikeout per inning in limited action. While his career 1.48 WHIP suggests some efficiency concerns, his 8.85 K/9 rate remains an attractive asset for managers looking for future strikeout upside.
The Braves' upcoming schedule includes a series against the Mets and a trip to Pittsburgh, but Smith-Shawver will remain in the minor leagues to build up his pitch count. He is not currently listed in the rotation and will likely require several more appearances before being considered for a big-league call-up. With no active games scheduled for the parent club this week, he offers no immediate fantasy utility. Sit.
