AJ Smith-Shawver struggles in spot start after recall, limiting immediate fantasy viability
Smith-Shawver was recalled on August 18 to bolster a pitching staff missing Spencer Strider and Reynaldo López, but he struggled in his outing yesterday, yielding four runs over 4.1 innings. Over his two appearances this year, the young righty has compiled a 6.59 ERA and 1.71 WHIP. The first-place Braves (74-53) are leaning on him for swingman depth as they navigate a three-game skid.
After displaying promise with a 4.00 ERA across 42.7 frames last season, Smith-Shawver has battled command issues in 2026, handing out five free passes in just 8.2 innings. Our models project a 4.50 ERA and 1.25 WHIP moving forward, but until his strikeout-to-walk ratio stabilizes, he remains a severe ratio risk.
Having already made his scheduled appearance this week against Minnesota, Smith-Shawver has no remaining starts lined up while Grant Holmes, Chris Sale, Bryce Elder, and Martín Pérez take the mound against Chicago and Milwaukee. Fantasy managers should keep him on reserve until a steady rotation slot opens up. Sit.
