National League Bullpen Report: Closer Updates and Role Changes

Let's turn our attention to National League bullpens in this article.

Braves

The only save to an Atlanta reliever this week went to Raisel Iglesias, the team's go-to option for saves. He got the save on Tuesday.

Robert Suarez is his top setup man, and would fill in if Iglesias were ever unavailable or injured.

Dodgers

Tanner Scott has been serving as the team's closer, but didn't earn one over three appearances over the past six days. He got a hold on Wednesday.

Kyle Hurt got a save in that Wednesday game, and he had a win and hold across his other two appearances this week. Alex Vesia had a pair of holds, as did Will Klein. Blake Treinen pitched once, but earned a save on Monday.

With Edwin Diaz out, the Dodgers don't have a locked-in closer. I like Scott the best still, but he's more a deep-league asset because he's not earning every save chance.

This is a situation to monitor closely, as rostering/utilizing the closer for the Dodgers is a very wise move for fantasy baseball owners.

Brewers

Trevor Megill might be back as the team's closer. He earned a save on Wednesday across two appearances over the past six days.

Abner Uribe had been earning saves, but pitched the eighth inning in his lone appearance over the past week. He drew some remarks from his manager for a gesture he made after getting out of the inning, and he might be the setup man to Megill for the time being.

Keep tabs on the Brewers' bullpen and who is getting saves, because the team is winning enough to utilize the closer in fantasy leagues.

Diamondbacks

Paul Sewald had a stellar six-day run on the mound, earning saves on Saturday, Tuesday and Wednesday. He's the go-to option in Arizona, and deserves more fantasy love.

Kevin Ginkel appears to be the top setup man, and could be in line for saves if Sewald is ever unavailable or hurt.

Padres

Mason Miller is the team's closer, but got just one appearance since Saturday. He earned a save that day.

Jason Adam, Adrian Morejon and Jeremiah Estrada are other late-inning options who could fill in for Miller if he were ever hurt or unavailable. Miller will earn every save chance otherwise.

Cubs

The Cubs didn't have a reliever who earned a save over the past six days.

Close Daniel Palencia pitched just once, not earning a decision on Tuesday. He's a good fantasy option, but the Cubs need to win more to support his fantasy case.

Cardinals

Riley O'Brien is the team's closer, but that could be coming to an end if he keeps struggling. He took a loss on Saturday in his lone appearance of the week.

JoJo Romero and George Soriano appear to be the top setup men, and next in line if O'Brien continues to struggle, or is injured.

This is a situation to watch for the time being.

Reds

No Cincy reliever earned a save over the past six days. Emilio Pagan is still out, and there's no clear closer that's replaced him.

Graham Ashcraft, Tony Santillan, Pierce Johnson, Brock Burke and Tejay Antone are some relief options in Cincinnati. Those are all deep-league fantasy assets until Pagan is back in the mix.

 Keep monitoring this situation as well.

Phillies

Jhoan Duran had a banner week as the team's closer, earning saves on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. He's a good fantasy asset now that Philly is winning a bit more.

Jose Alvarado earned a save on Wednesday, when Duran was likely unavailable. Brad Keller was the fill-in closer when Duran was injured earlier this season, and had also pitched two straight games, otherwise he'd have probably gotten that save chance.

The closer role is Duran's though, and only an injury would take him out of that role.

Pirates

Gregory Soto appears to have taken the closer role in Pittsburgh. He earned saves on Sunday and Monday.

Dennis Santana had been another closer option, but didn't earn a decision in either appearance he made this week. Mason Montgomery got a hold before Soto on Sunday.

Soto is the best fantasy reliever in Pittsburgh for now, but this is still a situation to monitor until he's clearly locked into the closer role.

Nationals

Three different Washington relievers earned saves over the past six days. One came from Mitchell Parker in a multi-inning effort, so he's not one to count on for saves moving forward.

Richard Lovelady got a save on Saturday, then a hold on Sunday. Orlando Ribalta earned the save on Sunday.

Gus Varland and Clayton Beeter are other late-inning relief options the team could turn to. No Washington reliever is worth more than deep-league fantasy ownership, and the team likely won't win enough anyways.

Keep monitoring this situation to see if anyone emerges as the go-to option for saves.

Marlins

No Miami reliever earned a save over the past week. Closer Pete Fairbanks pitched twice - he earned a win on Sunday and didn't get a decision on Wednesday.

Fairbanks is the go-to closer, but the team will need to win more often to make him a better fantasy asset. He's at least a good deep-league option.

Mets

Devin Williams is the team's closer. He pitched twice over the past six days, taking a loss on Sunday and then earning a save on Wednesday.

Luke Weaver and Brooks Raley are the top setup men for now. The job belongs to Williams for now. The Mets just need to win enough to make Williams a decent fantasy asset.

Giants

Caleb Kilian earned the team's only save over the past six days. He got that save on Sunday, then didn't earn a decision on Wednesday.

Keaton Winn and Sam Hentges have been filling setup men roles of late, with Erik Miller another late-inning option. 

San Fran isn't winning enough to support a go-to closer outside of deeper leagues. Kilian is the guy I like for now, but this situation is one to watch, as things could change in a hurry.

Rockies

No Colorado reliever earned a save over the past six days. With Victor Vodnik out, it's Antonio Senzatela and Juan Mejia who are expected to share closing duties.

Colorado isn't likely to win enough to support a full-time closer outside deeper leagues, so with no clear closer now, nobody is really even a decent deep-league option. Keep tabs on the situation, but don't be expecting a big fantasy asset to ever emerge.
