Aaron Civale is struggling to maintain efficiency as his ERA climbs above 5.00

Civale has endured a difficult stretch, posting a 9.00 ERA and a bloated 2.08 WHIP over his last 12 innings of work. The fourth-place Athletics (40-44) currently have him slotted as the fifth starter in the rotation, though he has struggled to provide the length needed by a staff riding a two-game losing streak. The team is also navigating a wave of injuries to key hitters like Brent Rooker and Zack Gelof, which puts even more pressure on the rotation to keep scores low.

Our data projects a 4.47 ERA for the rest of the season, but Civale is currently well behind that mark with a 5.14 ERA and 1.61 WHIP. While his career history suggests he can be a solid mid-rotation arm, the current high hit rate and base runner traffic are major red flags. Until he demonstrates better command, his recent production suggests he is due for continued struggles rather than a quick return to his projected baseline.
