Uphill Battle for Starting Job Limits Former First-Rounder's Fantasy Appeal
J.J. McCarthy enters his third season in Minnesota locked in a fierce battle with veteran Kyler Murray, who currently tops the depth chart. Despite McCarthy training with superstar receiver Justin Jefferson during the offseason and reporting that he is feeling better than ever, beat writers suggest the starting race is not close. McCarthy is currently slated as the primary backup, meaning his immediate path to fantasy relevance is entirely blocked.
Reflecting this quarterback uncertainty, McCarthy's draft stock has experienced wild swings. His ADP started around 323 in late May, spiked briefly to 190 in early June, and has since stabilized at 275. Our models remain highly conservative on his projections, anticipating a tiny 17.6-point season that views him as a fading asset and a draft-day fade in standard formats.
Last season, McCarthy posted 1,719 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions over 11 games. Given that he currently sits on the bench, his 36% ownership rate is primarily driven by dynasty and deep superflex managers. Unless Murray struggles or gets injured, McCarthy should remain on waiver wires in standard leagues.
