Backup Role Behind Kyler Murray Diminishes Immediate Fantasy Value

After an open training camp competition, J.J. McCarthy was officially relegated to backup duties behind starter Kyler Murray. While head coach Kevin O'Connell remains supportive of the 23-year-old's long-term development, McCarthy will open the season on the bench following a 2025 campaign where he tallied 1,719 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions over 11 games.

Draft sentiment has plummeted accordingly. McCarthy's roster rate dropped from 34% in late July down to 9%, while his ADP drifted past pick 270. With his starting aspirations on hold, fantasy drafters are rightly treating him as a falling asset rather than an early-season contributor in 1.0 PPR leagues.

Our projections expect virtually zero baseline fantasy production while Murray stays healthy. Surrounded by elite pass catchers like Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, McCarthy possesses intriguing contingent upside if called upon, but he is strictly a deep dynasty or Superflex stash for now.
