Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Relievers to Acquire After the MLB Trade Deadline: Dennis Santana, Jack Perkins and More

Looking at a few waiver wire relief pitchers to consider adding in fantasy baseball leagues after the MLB Trade Deadline.

After looking over some fantasy baseball waiver wire hitters to target after the trade deadline, let's do the same with pitchers.

It will have a reliever theme, as fantasy owners search for the next closers on several teams. We'll cover relievers more in closer reports over the weekend, so check back for that!

Here are waiver stories from Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Also be sure to check out Friday's streaming pitcher article.

Check out the top fantasy baseball waiver wire options everyday on FantasySP.

Should You Add Dennis Santana?

Santana is up to 29% after David Bednar was sent to the Yankees. Santana closed games for Pittsburgh early in the season, and now he's expected to take over the role again.

Over 46 appearances and 46 1/3 innings overall this season, Santana has a 1.36 earned run average. He is 3-2 with six saves, a blown save and 13 holds.

Santana has allowed just eight runs (seven earned) on 28 hits and 10 walks, while striking out 38 batters. He earned a save a couple days ago, and now should be the lead man for saves.

Pittsburgh isn't likely to rack up too many wins down the stretch, so it's always risky rostering the team's closer. Santana has been spectacular this season, and if he can keep limiting runs, even a lack of saves makes him a good fantasy asset.

I really only want to add Santana in deeper leagues, because he won't be among the league leaders in saves the rest of the way (most likely). If he's near the top in saves, then by all means he can be added in all leagues.

Some leagues don't reward saves as heavily, and you really need to be on top of your league settings when determining whether or not to add any of these guys. Santana has been stellar this season, but a lack of saves and strikeouts down the stretch is going to hold him back some, so there's other relief/closer options I'd go after in standard leagues.

Should You Add Jack Perkins?

Perkins is up to 13% after recently earning a save, and having Mason Miller get traded away to the Padres.

He has made eight relief appearances on the season, covering more than two innings in all but one of those outings. Perkins is 0-1 with three saves and one hold.

He has covered 19 2/3 innings so far, striking out 19 along the way. Perkins has a 2.75 ERA, allowing six runs on 11 hits and seven walks.

Perkins is a good guess to take over the closer role for the Athletics, but he's excelled in his multi-inning role, so I'm not sure the team wants to remove him from that role. He could still be a pretty good fantasy asset in that role, but if he's only earning a save or two a week, his fantasy ceiling is capped.

This is more a situation to watch than a player to immediately go after on the waiver wire. If he falls more into a traditional closer role, then he'll become a good deep-league asset in a hurry. If he sticks in the multi-inning role, then his own percentage will probably be 30% or less.

I don't think the Athletics are good enough to make whoever takes over as the new closer a standard league fantasy asset, but you just never know how things will shake out, so it's a situation worth tracking at the very least.

Should You Add JoJo Romero?

Many are expecting Romero to claim the closer role after Ryan Helsley was sent to the Mets. Romero is rostered in 16% of leagues right now.

Romero has appeared in 41 games and covered 35 1/3 innings so far this season. He's got a 2.04 ERA, 3-3 record and 16 holds. Romero has allowed 11 runs (eight earned) on 27 hits and 15 walks, while striking out 35 batters.

He hasn't allowed a run since July 5, and his last earned run came on June 26. Romero has been stellar in his late-inning role of late, and he's mostly been working the eighth inning, so it's easy to see why fantasy owners would think he's the next in line for saves.

He's worth an add in some deeper leagues already because of how he's pitched, but in order for him to get to full ownership in deeper leagues, we actually need to see Romero getting regular save chances.

St. Louis should still win enough games down the stretch to make Romero worth rostering in deeper leagues. I don't think he'll ever get to standard league ownership, but again, you just never know, so he's worth tracking in the new-look Cardinals' bullpen.

Should You Add Randy Rodriguez?

Rodriguez is rostered in 45% of leagues right now. He has the chance to earn some saves in San Francisco after Camilo Doval was shipped to the Yankees. Ryan Walker is still in town though, so it's not as likely that Rodriguez slides into the closer role as it is for a few of these other pitchers.

He's worked in 44 games this season, covering 45 innings. Rodriguez is 3-2 with a save, two blown saves and 13 holds, while sporting a 1.20 ERA. He's allowed eight runs (six earned) on 29 hits and nine walks, while striking out 62 batters.

There's a lot of good numbers in there, so if he can add some saves to the mix, there's some legit fantasy appeal.

I'm a fan of adding Rodriguez in deeper leagues, just in case he does take over the closer role. San Fran should also win enough down the stretch to make a closer at least worth rostering in deeper leagues, and you might need to add Rodriguez now if you want him.

There's a chance he does become the go-to closer, and he has good standard league appeal then. That makes the Giants' closer situation, and Rodriguez's results in the near future worth watching on a daily basis.

If he starts to emerge as the closer, he'll be scooped up in a hurry after fantasy owners also check out his ERA and strikeout numbers. Don't wait too long to add Rodriguez, because otherwise he might get scooped up.

Should You Add Corbin Martin?

Martin was already on the rise after earning a save recently, but after all the Orioles' deadline deals, and the injury to Felix Bautista, Martin should really get some fantasy attention now. He's only at 5% at the time this article was published though.

He's appeared in just seven games this season, but is 1-0 with a save and hold already. Martin has a 1.23 ERA over 7 1/3 innings, giving up a run on three hits and four walks. Martin has 10 strikeouts already.

Martin certainly looks like the go-to closer in Baltimore now, and he could stick in that role all season if the Orioles stay out of the playoff picture. What would be the point in re-activating Bautista, especially after he missed last season?

Martin is worth adding in a good amount of deeper leagues, just in the chance he does close games now for Baltimore. His own percentage will rise as the situation plays out, but I think he'll top out as a deep-league asset.

Baltimore likely won't win enough down the stretch to move Martin into standard league territory, and if the Orioles do get hot, I'd expect Bautista to get his closer role back.
