Fantasy Baseball Weekly Projections: 8 Waiver Wire Options to Consider
Looking for some short-term fantasy baseball help? These eight hitters and pitchers could be worth adding this week.
Let's now turn our fantasy baseball attention to some more waiver wire/streaming options, using weekly projections to identify some more options.
Here are the more traditional waiver wire stories on hitters and pitchers.
Weekly fantasy baseball projections can be found on FantasySP all season! Daily projections are also available!
Hitters
Zack Gelof - Athletics
Gelof is rostered in 64.84% of fantasy baseball leagues right now. He's projected for a big week across seven scheduled games.
Gelof was part of the waiver wire hitter story today as well, so he's all over the place - that should be a good hint to add him today/this week. He's performed well this season, and especially since returning from the injured list on August 10.
Over 73 games and 273 plate appearances this season, Gelof has a .276 average and .332 on-base percentage. He's got 34 RBIs, 48 runs scored, 17 walks, eight stolen bases and 67 strikeouts this season. Over his 69 total hits, Gelof has 12 doubles, 14 home runs and a triple.
Gelof has delivered at the plate, and should be eligible at several positions, which makes him an even better fantasy asset. Gelof is a good asset in deeper leagues, and can be utilized in standard leagues too until his bat cools off some.
Chase Meidroth - Chicago White Sox
Meidroth is set to play seven games as well. He's rostered in 55.3% of leagues right now.
He's hit pretty well of late, with 15 hits and seven walks over his past 11 contests and 49 plate appearances. Meidroth has four doubles and three home runs among the hits, plus nine RBIs and runs scored.
Meidroth is at a .278 average and .354 OBP over 118 contests and 497 plate appearances for the season. He has 24 doubles and 12 homers among his 121 total hits, plus 49 RBIs, 71 runs scored, 49 walks, two stolen bases and 111 strikeouts.
The primary third baseman should be eligible at shortstop, and could eventually have third base eligibility too. Regardless of where he can play, Meidroth has delivered enough at the plate to roster/utilize in most deeper leagues, and even be an option in some standard leagues. Consider him if you need some short-term help.
Tyler Stephenson - Cincinnati Reds
Stephenson is at just 22.12% owned. He has eight games scheduled, but as a catcher, you can factor in a few off days.
He has four hits over his past four games (three starts). Stephenson has two homers in that span, plus four RBIs and runs scored, and he's also walked once.
Stephenson has a .251 average and .333 OBP over 95 contests and 339 plate appearances this season. He's got 16 doubles, 12 home runs and 75 total hits. Stephenson has also posted 39 RBIs, 32 runs scored, 36 walks and 86 strikeouts.
The primary catcher has performed better of late, so he's a fantasy asset on the rise. Stephenson is worth some more deep-league adds, especially if you need some catcher help. I don't see him being a standard league option, but if you just need a streamer for a few days, or the week, he's not a terrible option.
Mauricio Dubon - Atlanta Braves
Dubon sits at 69.12% rostered right now going into an eight-game week as well.
Dubon has just one hit over his past four games, but he's still projected for a big week at the plate. He owns a .262 average and .308 OBP on the season, so he's been a solid fantasy asset.
Over 117 games and 475 plate appearances, Dubon has 115 hits, including 23 doubles, 10 home runs and two triples. He has 61 RBIs, 54 runs scored, 28 walks, six stolen bases and 60 strikeouts.
Something boosting his fantasy value is his defensive versatility, as he can play and be fantasy eligible at several spots. That makes Dubon a good deep-league option, and decent standard league streaming option, so consider adding him for the coming week.
Pitchers
Tyler Mahle - Atlanta Braves
Mahle is owned in 41.74% of leagues as he enters a two-start week. He has starts set against the Twins and Brewers. Minnesota is a solid matchup, but Milwaukee is a bit tougher test.
He's pitched well since joining the Braves a couple weeks ago. Mahle has made two starts, covering 12 innings and allowing just one run on seven hits and two walks - he has 16 strikeouts over those outings.
Over 20 starts this season, Mahle is 4-9 with a 4.64 earned run average. He's struck out 105 batters over 106 2/3 innings.
I like the way Mahle is trending, and think he's a solid deep-league fantasy option for both of his scheduled starts this week. I also wouldn't mind trying him in some standard leagues for his outing against the Twins, but I'd likely skip him against the Brewers.
Kyle Leahy and Andre Pallante - St. Louis Cardinals
Leahy and Pallante have starts lined up against the Reds and Phillies. Cincinnati is an OK streaming matchup, while Philadelphia is a bit tougher test. Leahy sits at 56.68% rostered, while Pallante is at 52.75% owned.
Leahy has allowed two or fewer runs in nine straight appearances. He has covered 47 1/3 innings in that timeframe, and has a 4-0 record. Leahy has a 1.52 ERA though, with 46 strikeouts along the way.
Leahy now has a 3.38 ERA over 23 starts overall. He's 9-4 and has 105 strikeouts over 117 1/3 innings. He's been a sneaky-good fantasy pitcher, but the lack of long starts holds his ceiling back a bit.
Pallante has allowed two or fewer runs in four straight starts. He's 2-0 with a 1.09 ERA over that span. Pallante has worked 24 2/3 innings, striking out 17 along the way.
This season across 23 starts, Pallante is 12-6 with a 3.46 ERA, so he's been a solid option as well in fantasy. He has 92 strikeouts over 130 innings pitched, which is about the only thing holding him back from being owned in a ton more leagues.
I like both Leahy and Pallante in deeper leagues for their starts against the Reds this week. I'd also be OK streaming either guy in standard leagues for those starts. The starts against the Phillies are tougher, but if both fare well against Cincy, I'd at least consider them in standard leagues again - you can confidently start them in most deeper leagues for those starts, as long as they are solid against Cincy first.
Luis Castillo - Chicago White Sox
Castillo is rostered in 58.06% of fantasy leagues right now. He's got matchups against the Cubs and Mets this week. Chicago is a bit tougher test for Castillo, while New York is a very favorable matchup for any streamer).
Castillo was another pitcher who joined a new team a couple weeks ago. He was roughed up in his first start with the White Sox, but was great his last time out. Castillo pitched seven scoreless frames against the Reds, allowing a hit and two walks, while striking out 10 batters.
Over 19 starts and 22 appearances this season, Castillo now has a 4.96 ERA over 110 2/3 innings. He's 4-9 and has 101 strikeouts to his name.
Castillo has been a bigger fantasy asset in the past, but has struggled a bit this season. Maybe his last start was the beginning of a strong finish to the season, so keep tabs on him. I like him in deeper leagues most against the Cubs, and if he's solid in that outing, he could be an option in all leagues against the Mets.
