Sunday's Fantasy Baseball Streaming Pitchers: Tomoyuki Sugano, Joey Cantillo and More
Six starting pitchers in action on Sunday who are widely available in fantasy leagues and have good matchups.
Happy Gilmore 2 was released on Netflix on Friday. The first Happy Gilmore was my favorite movie for several years while I was growing up, and I've probably watched it over 100 times. I know every scene; I could recite every line. So, of course, I was hyped about the second movie being released.
And it's…fine. The first hour was funny, but it gets a little silly at some point in the middle and finishes with a whimper rather than a bang. That doesn't mean it's not worth watching. There are fun callbacks and plenty of laughs, but don't go into it thinking you are going to see a classic. It happens.
Moving to the fantasy baseball world, let's look at six starting pitchers in action on Sunday who are widely available in fantasy leagues and have good matchups. Most stats are from MLB.com, as are the probable pitchers. The full streamer rankings are listed at the bottom.

Noah Cameron, Kansas City Royals vs. Cleveland Guardians
Joey Cantillo, Cleveland Guardians @ Kansas City Royals
We'll go with three matchups of pitchers facing each other today, a trifecta of bottom-10 offenses. The Royals and Guardians combined for 18 runs in a doubleheader yesterday, not necessarily the type of performance we're hoping for with streaming pitchers, but these teams are both weak offensively over the full season. Both teams are in the bottom five in runs scored, a good indication of how their seasons have gone offensively.
He's only 76 innings into his career, but Cameron has shown big things so far. He has allowed just 55 hits and 22 runs with both a walk rate and strikeout rate that are average or better. His sparkling 2.61 ERA and 1.01 WHIP have him owned in just under half of fantasy leagues, so this might be your chance to pick him up before he gets a permanent spot on someone's roster, especially with the nice matchup here.
Cantillo similarly has a low career innings total (84 2/3) but hasn't had as much early success as Cameron. Cantillo walks too many guys, but he also has a phenomenal strikeout rate (28.4% versus the league average around 22%). He has mostly worked as a reliever this season, so that rate might come down if he keeps starting, but Cantillo is showing something real right now that gives him fantasy value.
Cameron is a mid-to-high-level streamer and Cantillo a mid-level streamer. The former gets the slight advantage because he has looked better in his short time, but both guys have good matchups and are set up for possible successful outings.
Bryce Elder, Atlanta Braves @ Texas Rangers
Jack Leiter, Texas Rangers vs. Atlanta Braves
This is a matchup of teams who may have fancied themselves contenders before the season started. While the Rangers are just a half game out of the wild card and have a top-five pitching staff, the Braves have gone the other way and are probably already out of the playoff race. They are 15 games under .500 and 11 back in the wild card; Atlanta will have to go on a phenomenal run to work their way back into the hunt and jump at least six other teams.
Elder is around average with walks, but he is a below-average strikeout pitcher. Elder had really good numbers in 2022-23, but that has turned sharply the other way the past two seasons, as he had an ERA over 6.50 last season and is over 5.50 this year. His walk and strikeout rates have been right near his career numbers, but he has been hit hard the past two seasons, giving up 164 base hits and 24 home runs in 134 1/3 innings.
Leiter is another guy with a limited track record, but he has a big-time pedigree as a former top-10 pick and son of a former major-league starter. His early career hasn't been great, as Leiter holds worse-than-average walk and strikeout rates, and he has been hit a little hard, with a 5.61 ERA. There might be better times ahead for Leiter, but we can't look at him as a top pick right now; he's just a struggling pitcher.
Elder and Leiter are both low-to-mid-level streamers. The matchups are right, but both guys have struggled with giving up runs, making it tough to expect big things in this one.
Austin Gomber, Colorado Rockies @ Baltimore Orioles
Tomoyuki Sugano, Baltimore Orioles vs. Colorado Rockies
You know Colorado is bad. Not only is their 27-77 record 11 games worse than any other team, but the Rockies also have a minus-264 run differential, almost 140 runs worse than the next closest team (the A's). Baltimore is better but still harbors both a weak offensive team and pitching staff. You might not realize that from looking at yesterday's result: the Orioles won 18-0 in a shellacking of their feeble opponent.
Gomber didn't make his season debut until mid-June because of a shoulder injury, and he has struggled in his short time: in 34 1/3 innings, Gomber has allowed 50 hits, 25 runs (23 earned, 6.03 ERA), and seven home runs. Gomber does well limiting walks, but he otherwise doesn't excel anywhere, making it tough to expect many big things.
Sugano keeps showing OK work, but I can't get behind him because of his low strikeout rate: he has struck out just 14.2% of the batters he has faced, and while he does well limiting walks, he has gotten hit a little hard, and those K numbers limit his fantasy value. I can't trust Sugano in fantasy baseball.
Gomber and Sugano are both low-level streamers. Their lack of impact, either through low K rates or getting hit hard, has seriously compromised their numbers, making it more likely they struggle than excel in this one.
