Fantasy Baseball Closer Update for National League Teams: Ryan Pressly and Shelby Miller Trending Up

Looking at closers from each National League team as June heats up.

It's time for another fantasy baseball update on closers.

We'll look at the National League first today - here's the last NL closer update. Check back later for the American League writeup.

Explore the best in-season tool to manage lineup/start decisions including waiver pickups, projections, trade suggestions, trade value charts, rest of season rankings, power rankings, and tons more with Fantasy Assistant.

Dodgers

Tanner Scott leads the Dodgers with 12 saves. He's got a 1-2 record, five blown saves and six holds on the season. Scott has a 3.98 ERA over 31 2/3 innings.

Scott has been pretty good in June, allowing three runs over six innings. He's earned two saves and a win, while also having a hold and loss. He earned a hold in his last appearance, so that's something to watch.

Alex Vesia earned the save that night. It was his third save of the season, and he also has a 2-0 record and 11 holds. Vesia has a 2.79 ERA over 29 innings.

I'm not sure if this was a sign of things to come or just a one-time thing. It's worth watching in case Scott and Vesia start splitting the save chances. At any rate, Scott's own percentage (89) shouldn't go up until we know his role for certain - I actually think he's rostered in a few too many leagues, but I get wanting the closer from the top MLB team.

Giants

Camilo Doval and Ryan Walker have 10 saves each for San Francisco.

Doval has a 3-1 record, three blown saves and seven holds this season over 33 appearances. He's got a 1.69 ERA over 32 innings.

Doval allowed a run in his last appearance, but has surrendered just three runs over seven June appearances, covering 7 1/3 innings. He's the No. 1 closer and fantasy reliever you want from the Giants.

Walker is 1-3 with three blown saves and six holds. He has a 4.39 ERA over 26 2/3 innings though. He's down to 67% rostered, and that will continue to drop as long as he isn't earning saves.

Padres

Robert Suarez has 21 of the team's 24 saves on the season.

He's 1-1 with just two blown saves and a 1.78 ERA over 30 1/3 innings. Suarez has 32 strikeouts to his name as well.

Suarez is the go-to reliever for San Diego, and one of the best fantasy relievers in the game this season. Enjoy his success.

Diamondbacks

A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez are both out with injuries, and Martinez is now done for the season, so Shelby Miller is the new No. 1 closer for Arizona.

Miller has a 3-1 record and seven saves on the season. He also has three blown saves and eight holds, while sporting a 1.57 ERA over 28 2/3 innings.

Miller is on the rise as a fantasy asset, and is rostered in 40% of leagues now. That number will grow with each save he earns.

Rockies

Colorado still doesn't have a go-to closer. The team doesn't win enough to make one reliever a good fantasy asset anyways.

Jake Bird is the most-rostered Colorado reliever, sitting at 6%. Seth Halvorsen and Zach Agnos are at 3% each.

Avoid these guys outside the deepest of leagues.

Mets

Edwin Diaz has 15 of the team's 22 saves, but he's the clear No. 1 option there.

He's 3-0 with just one blown save on the season. Diaz has worked 28 1/3 innings and struck out 42 batters while also sporting a 2.22 ERA.

Diaz is one of the top fantasy relievers in the game, and that's likely to continue all season.

Phillies

With Jose Alvarado suspended, Jordan Romano has taken over as the Phillies' closer.

Romano has struggled this month, allowing three runs over four appearances and 3 1/3 innings. He's 0-3 with eight saves, two blown saves and five holds this season. Romano has an ugly 7.40 ERA over 24 1/3 innings so far.

Romano is still the No. 1 option for saves in Philly. At some point, the team might give someone else a chance.

Braves

Raisel Iglesias has eight of the team's 10 saves.

He is 3-5 with four blown saves and a hold, and hasn't earned a save since May 16. Iglesias has a 6.23 ERA over 26 innings so far.

Iglesias is down to 72% rostered, and it probably shouldn't be that high even. Look elsewhere for fantasy relief help in standard leagues.

Nationals

Kyle Finnegan has 18 of the team's 19 saves this season.

He is 0-1 with four blown saves over 25 appearances and innings. Finnegan has a 2.16 ERA so far.

Finnegan is an overlooked fantasy asset at just 81% rostered. He's worth adding in a few more leagues, at least.

Marlins

Calvin Faucher has saves in his past two appearances for Miami.

He's 2-2 with six saves, three blown saves and two holds this season. Faucher has a 4.01 ERA over 24 2/3 innings and is owned in 9% of leagues. Miami doesn't win enough to roster him in too many more leagues than that.

Cubs

Daniel Palencia has been serving as the Cubs' closer, but Ryan Pressly earned the last save between the two, with Palencia pitching in the eighth inning in that contest.

Pressly is 2-2 with five saves and three holds this season. He's got a 3.81 ERA over 26 innings, but nine of the 14 total runs he's allowed (and eight of the 11 earned runs) came in one outing.

Since the blowup outing, Pressly has allowed an unearned run over 13 innings, with 11 strikeouts in that span. He might be taking the closer role back in Chicago.

Palencia has been pretty good since taking over the closer role on May 19. He allowed two runs in his first save chance and blew the save, but has allowed two runs (one earned) over nine games and 9 1/3 innings since. Palencia has five saves, a loss and a hold over that span.

Pressly is up to 50% rostered now, and is trending back up. Palencia is at 51% and is trending down.

This is a situation to closely watch, as the closer on one of the league's best teams is a good fantasy asset to have.

Brewers

Trevor Megill continues to lead the Brewers.

He's allowed three runs over five innings this month, but has four saves and a blown save so far. Megill has six strikeouts to offset some of the runs allowed.

Megill has a 1-2 record, 14 saves and two blown saves on the season. He's the go-to guy in Milwaukee, and that should remain the case for a while.

Cardinals

Ryan Helsley has had a rough month, but probably has a firm grasp of the closer role in St. Louis yet.

He's allowed a run on two hits in all three appearances this month. Of his five blown saves on the season, three have come this month.

He's 3-0 with 13 saves and a 3.75 ERA over 24 innings, so Helsley has been pretty good otherwise. Helsley sits at 95% rostered, and should work back up to 100% once he finds his groove again.

Reds

Emilio Pagan continues to serve as the Reds' closer.

He's 0-2 with 16 saves, two blown saves and a hold over 29 appearance this season. Pagan has a 3.45 ERA and 35 punchouts over 28 2/3 innings.

Pagan is rostered in 76% of leagues and would be higher than that if he was on a better team. He's a name to watch at the trade deadline.

Pirates

David Bednar is the closer in Pittsburgh and has 10 saves on the year now.

He's 1-4 with three holds and no blown saves. Bednar has a 3.42 ERA over 23 2/3 innings, along with 33 strikeouts.

His poor start to the season is a thing of the past. Bednar has been great as a fantasy asset, and would be helped if the Pirates were better. He's another trade target, so his own percentage of 57 could rise quickly if he's traded to a better team.
