Fantasy Baseball Drop Candidates: 5 Players to Consider Letting Go Monday

After going over some fantasy baseball waiver wire/streaming options (pitchers, hitters, weekly projections), let's discuss some possible drop candidates.

Kyle Stowers - Miami Marlins

Stowers is rostered in 71% of fantasy baseball leagues right now. He was over 80% earlier this month.

He went hitless in the first three games back from the break. He had a walk to reach base once, but also struck out six times.

Stowers has 102 strikeouts over 75 games and 317 plate appearances, so that's a lot of negative points. He also has just a .229 average and .313 on-base percentage, which is way below the .288 average and .368 OBP he posted last season. He has 16 doubles, 12 homers, three triples, 64 total hits, 42 RBIs, 36 runs scored, 29 walks and a stolen base.

Stowers' season hasn't gone according to plan, and he's probably owned in too many leagues right now. He's definitely droppable in standard leagues right now - there's plenty of fantasy outfielders to go after instead. He's also eligible at first base now, but that's another loaded fantasy spot with a ton of fantasy options to try instead.

Casey Mize - Detroit Tigers

Mize is sitting at 85% owned right now, but that could drop quickly if he hits the injured list again. He was hit in the wrist by a comebacker in his last start, but his ongoing groin issue is what the big worry is.

He lasted just 3 1/3 innings on Sunday, but allowed just one run on five hits and a walk, while striking out five. Mize has allowed three or fewer earned runs in four straight starts.

He has a 2.79 earned run average this season, but that's over 15 starts in total. Mize is 4-6 and has 82 punchouts over 80 2/3 innings.

Mize has been really good when healthy, but stops and starts to his season has his own percentage way lower than it would be if he posted those numbers across a fully-healthy season. He's one to keep tabs on, but more a pitcher to treat as a streamer with his injury woes.

Jo Adell - Los Angeles Angels

Adell is rostered in 66% of fantasy leagues at the moment. He was at just under 70% a week ago.

He has no hits since the All-Star break, while also striking out five times. Adell has no hits and seven punchouts over his past six games and 24 plate appearances.

Adell now has a .237 average and .282 OBP over 99 games and 411 plate appearances on the season. He has 15 doubles, 13 homers and a triple among his 91 total knocks, plus 53 RBIs, 42 runs scored, 12 walks, 92 strikeouts and three stolen bases. 

There's some solid numbers in there, but a low OBP and high strikeout totals hold him back plenty. In cold stretches, he's one to avoid in standard leagues, and even bench in deeper leagues. Look elsewhere for fantasy outfield help in the meantime.

Hunter Brown - Houston Astros

Brown is starting to be let go in a few leagues after being at 100% most of the season. He's at 98.22% right now.

Brown has made just eight starts on the year, so injuries are also a concern with him. He returned in mid-June, but hasn't looked like his old self yet.

In six starts since, Brown is 0-1 with a 5.22 ERA over 29 1/3 innings pitched. He has 26 strikeouts, but allowing 19 runs (17 earned) on 25 hits and 22 walks doesn't make him a very good fantasy asset.

It hurts to drop him after he was a high-end draft pick, and stashing him during his IL stint, but Brown just isn't cutting it right now. I'd try to hold out hope on him, or trade him away first, but a couple more poor starts will lead to him being dropped in most standard leagues, so don't be afraid to make the move if you need more out of your fantasy pitchers.

Dansby Swanson - Chicago Cubs

Swanson sits at 78% owned at the moment. He's been above 85% this month, but is trending more down than up of late.

He has a hit across three games since the break. Swanson has two hits over his past five games, and also has struck out six times in that stretch.

A hot stretch a few weeks ago has his average up to .207 and OBP up to .287 over 95 games and 367 plate appearances this season. He's starting to regress, and he's not worth fantasy ownership/utilization in most standard leagues as a result. Swanson has 16 homers, 11 doubles and three triples among his 67 total knocks, plus 58 RBIs, 60 runs scored, 13 stolen bases, 37 walks and 87 strikeouts.

Swanson is one to keep tabs on in case he gets red hot again, but there's plenty of fantasy shortstops out there, so if you need that position to deliver more, don't be afraid to drop him and look elsewhere for help right now.
