Saturday's Top Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Options: Josh Smith, Tylor Megill and More
Looking at a few waiver wire hitters and pitchers to consider adding in fantasy baseball leagues.
Let's go over some more fantasy baseball waiver wire options for Saturday, June 14.
We won't cover any hitters who appeared in stories on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday or any pitchers from articles on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday. Here's another combined waiver story from Thursday.
Check out the top fantasy baseball waiver wire options everyday on FantasySP.
Should You Add Josh Smith?
Smith has been added in 4.19% of leagues so far today, bringing his overall mark up to 30.4%.
He's collected two hits in five straight contests. Over that stretch, Smith has two homers and two doubles, four RBIs, seven runs scored and two walks and strikeouts.
Smith has played in 61 games overall, getting 235 plate appearances so far. He's got a .284 average and .350 OBP, along with 20 RBIs, eight stolen bases, 29 runs scored, 21 walks and 41 strikeouts. Among his 60 hits, Smith has nine doubles, seven homers and a triple.
He has pretty well-rounded numbers as a hitter, but his recent hot stretch has bumped his average up 28 points and OBP up 15 points. Smith still had solid numbers before that, but he's bumped himself up a level for now.
Smith was always a pretty solid deep-league option, even if he wasn't rostered in all those leagues before. He is a standard league option while his bat is hot.
Smith's fantasy value gets a bump because he plays all over the field and gets into the lineup nearly every game. He's started five straight games, all against right-handed pitchers. Smith has played at first second and third base, shortstop and all three outfield spots this season.
See what positions Smith might be eligible at. I think that position versatility makes him a good deep-league option all season, and a must-own and start hitter when he's hot at the plate, like he is now.
Smith could be a short-term fantasy asset in standard leagues while on this hot streak. It likely won't last super long, so take advantage of things while you can.
Should You Add Michael Lorenzen?
Lorenzen is up 4.5% and sits at 23.3% overall.
He'll make a start for the Royals on Saturday, taking on the Athletics.
Lorenzen has made 13 starts this season, with KC going 7-6 in those contests. He is 4-6 with a 4.94 earned run average over 71 innings. Lorenzen has allowed 41 runs (39 earned) on 76 hits and 22 walks, while striking out 61 batters.
He's coming off a strong start against the White Sox. Lorenzen covered six innings in that one, allowing two runs on a hit and two walks, while punching out seven.
Lorenzen has not faced the Athletics yet this season. It's a solid matchup on paper, but not an elite one.
Lorenzen is just a deep-league streaming option for this start to me. A matchup against the Padres will maybe follow, so Lorenzen is just a streaming option today. Depending on how else you view some other streamers, Lorenzen could be one of the best options today.
Should You Add Tomoyuki Sugano?
Sugano has been added in 2.13% of leagues and is up to 53.41% overall.
He'll make a start against the Angels on Saturday, which is one of the better fantasy matchups out there, especially on a weak streaming day.
Sugano faced LA back on May 9, earning a win after working 7 1/3 innings. He allowed a run on three hits and no walks, while striking out five.
He's made 13 starts, with Baltimore winning seven of those games. Sugano is 5-4 with a 3.23 ERA over 75 1/3 innings, allowing 28 runs (27 earned) on 71 hits and 12 walks, while striking out 42 batters.
Sugano's season-long numbers are solid, and his last start against LA was great, but he's also coming off one of his worst starts of the season. He allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and a walk over just 4 1/3 innings - he struck out two in that one.
I still like the idea of starting Sugano today in his good matchup. He's probably one my favorite streaming options of anyone we'll discuss today.
I'd start him confidently in deeper leagues and consider him in standard leagues too. Sugano's lower strikeout numbers are the only thing holding him back from being a bigger fantasy asset and must-start pitcher today. Trust the matchup though.
Should You Add Tylor Megill?
Megill is up 2.07% and is rostered in 74.15% of leagues now.
Across 13 starts, Megill is 5-4, and the Mets are 6-7 in those contests. Megill has a 3.76 ERA over 64 2/3 innings, allowing 31 runs (27 earned) on 53 hits and 31 walks. He's also struck out 84 batters.
He hasn't faced Tampa Bay this season, and it's just an average fantasy matchup on paper. On a weak streaming day though, Megill is a pretty good option.
Megill's ERA is solid, and that high strikeout mark gives him great upside. He's right there with Sugano as my favorite streaming option on Saturday.
I'd be happy to give Megill a streaming start in deeper leagues and think he's a must-start option there. He's a good standard league streaming option as well, so feel free to add and stream him in those leagues too.
Should You Add Jose Quintana?
Quintana is rostered in 32% of fantasy leagues heading into a Saturday start.
He will face the Cardinals, which is a bit better than average matchup. Quintana faced them on April 27, earning a win after tossing five innings. He allowed a run on five hits and three walks, while punching out six.
He's made eight starts this season and the Brewers are 6-2 in those contests. Quintana has covered 44 innings, allowing 15 runs (13 earned) on 40 hits and 18 walks. Along with his 2.66 ERA, Quintana has racked up 31 strikeouts.
Quintana is just a so-so streaming option today. He has only pitched six innings (or more) on two occasions, and none have come since April 22. He's got low strikeout upside and needs to limit runs to turn in a good fantasy outing.
I think there's higher-upside streaming options available to you today. He is a deep-league streaming option, and considerable in standard leagues, but by no means is a must-start pitcher.
Should You Add Clayton Kershaw?
Kershaw is up 4.29% today, bringing his overall mark to 51.7%.
He'll start against the Giants on Saturday. It's a better matchup than most think. Kershaw hasn't faced San Fran yet this season across five starts.
The Dodgers are 3-2 in Kershaw's starts so far. The veteran is 1-0 with a 4.35 ERA over just 20 2/3 innings. He's allowed 12 runs (10 earned) on 23 hits and nine walks, while striking out 15 batters.
He's coming off his best start of the season on June 8. Kershaw worked five innings against St. Louis, allowing a run on six hits, while striking out seven and walking none.
Kershaw is limited a bit like Quintana because he hasn't worked too deep in any start yet. The veteran is trustworthy because of what he's done in the past and is coming off a solid start.
I'd be fine starting Kershaw in deeper leagues and considering him in standard leagues. He's not a must-start pitcher by any means, but on a weak day for streaming options, Kershaw is a fine option.
