Will Warren and Shane Baz Among Top Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pitcher Pickups on Friday
Looking at a few waiver wire pitchers to consider adding in fantasy baseball leagues.
After checking out some fantasy baseball waiver wire hitting options, let's go over another round of fantasy pitchers maybe worth adding.
We won't cover any pitchers discussed in Friday's streaming article, or from waiver stories on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday.
Check out the top fantasy baseball waiver wire options everyday on FantasySP.
Should You Add Will Warren?
Warren is up 2.88% so far today. He sits at 69.64% overall.
He is another streaming option on Friday. Warren will battle the Athletics. He faced them back on May 9, twirling 7 1/3 innings and earning a win. He allowed a run on four hits and a walk, while striking out seven batters.
Warren has made 16 starts on the season, with the Yankees going 9-7 in those contests. He's 4-4 with a 4.66 earned run average over 75 1/3 innings. Warren has allowed 41 runs (39 earned) on 69 hits and 31 walks, but has also struck out 96 batters already.
You can see that the big strikeout total is powering Warren as a fantasy asset. He's really pitched quite well this season, but a couple rough starts have hurt him. His worst start was allowing seven runs while getting just four outs, so if you take that start away, Warren has really been a bit above average this season.
The matchup is solid on Friday, and Warren has already delivered good results against the Athletics this season. He's pitched well of late, allowing five runs over his past three starts, which spans 18 innings - he has 21 strikeouts in that span.
I'm all for starting Warren tonight in deeper leagues and would say he's really close to being a must-start pitcher in those leagues. I also like the idea of starting Warren in standard leagues tonight. I think he could be in for a really good fantasy showing.
Should You Add Luis L. Ortiz?
Ortiz has been added in 2.4% of leagues, bringing his overall mark to 29.67%.
He's going to start against the Cardinals on Friday night. Ortiz hasn't faced the Cardinals this season.
Ortiz has made 15 starts this season, with the Guardians going 6-9 in those contests. He's 4-8 but with a 3.98 ERA.
Over 81 2/3 innings, Ortiz has allowed 40 runs (39 earned) on 74 hits and 41 walks, while striking out 91 batters. He has at least five strikeouts in five straight starts.
He's coming off one of his best starts. Ortiz worked six scoreless innings against the Athletics his last time out. He allowed two hits and two walks, while punching out 10 batters.
Ortiz allowed 10 runs in the two outings before that, and he's kind of been up and down throughout the season. As his ERA suggests though, he's been above average more often than not.
I like Ortiz in this matchup tonight. He's pitched pretty well most of the season, and is coming off a good start. The matchup is solid, and I think Ortiz can deliver a good fantasy showing in it.
I'd be fine starting Ortiz in any leagues, but think he's a better deep-league option. He's not a must-start pitcher in those leagues, but he's close to being one.
Should You Add Jose Soriano?
Soriano is rostered in 69.73% of leagues after a 2.28% increase today.
He also will start on Friday night, getting the nod against the Nationals. Soriano hasn't faced the Nats this season.
Soriano has made 16 starts for the Angels, with the team going 7-9 in those games. He is 5-5 and sports a 3.39 ERA.
Across 93 innings, Soriano has allowed 38 runs (35 earned) on 89 hits and 43 walks, while also striking out 80 batters. He has double-digit strikeout efforts in two of his past three contests, and has logged 28 punchouts in that span.
Soriano has been stellar over those last three starts, going 1-0 with a 0.87 ERA. He's allowed two runs on 11 hits and six walks. He faced the Athletics, Yankees and Astros in that stretch, so it's not like he's just taking advantage of great matchups.
He has a pretty good matchup on Friday, so he should be a big-time fantasy pickup and streaming option. Soriano is honestly a bit overlooked in fantasy leagues right now.
He's a must-start pitcher in deeper redraft leagues for me tonight. Soriano is pitching too well and the matchup is too good to not try him in.
I also would be fine streaming Soriano in a good amount of standard leagues tonight. He's got a solid fantasy floor, and a really good fantasy ceiling. I think he could deliver a big-time fantasy score tonight.
Should You Add Shane Baz?
Baz is up 2.05% and is rostered in 73.9% of leagues overall now.
He started on Thursday, so he's on the rise for a good outing. Baz tossed eight scoreless innings against the Royals, allowing just three hits and a walk along the way. He struck out nine batters too.
Baz bounced back from a five-run outing in his last game, and hasn't allowed over three runs in any other start between May 24 and today. Even throwing in that five-run appearance, Baz has a 3.24 ERA over his past seven starts, and he's won five of those games.
He's 8-3 for the season, and hasn't taken a loss since May 18. The Rays are 12-4 in his starts.
Baz has covered 90 2/3 innings overall, allowing 44 runs on 79 hits and 35 walks, while striking out 86. That equates to a 4.37 ERA, so you can see Baz struggled much more in the early part of the season.
He seems to be settling in now, and is looking like a good fantasy keeper in most setups. Next up for him is likely a start against the Athletics, and then maybe a test against the Tigers.
Baz hasn't faced the Athletics yet, but has pitched against the Tigers. That was his five-run appearance back on June 20.
For his next start at least, I like the idea of starting Baz in all league types, so I'd be fine adding him today in any league type. His own percentage should stick near 75%, then rise a few more percent on the day he starts against the Athletics.
Depending on how he looks in that start, we can determine if Baz is a good option against the Tigers or not.
Should You Add Clayton Kershaw?
Kershaw is up 1.85% and sits at 82.79% overall now.
He pitched on Thursday against the Rockies. Kershaw delivered a strong start and got his fourth straight win. He allowed a run on two hits and a walk, while striking out five along the way. Kershaw could have scored even more fantasy points had he not been pulled at 69 pitches.
Kershaw has now made eight starts, and the Dodgers are 6-2 in those games. He's 4-0 with a 3.03 ERA over 38 2/3 innings. It's honestly crazy how good Kershaw still is at age 37. Kershaw has allowed 15 runs (13 earned) on 33 hits and 13 walks, while striking out 29 batters.
He's being limited a bit with his pitch count, most likely in an effort to keep him healthy all season so he can help the Dodgers win another World Series. That limits him a bit from a fantasy perspective, but he's trending up right now and can still deliver good enough results in those lower pitch count starts.
He has the White Sox lined up for his next start, so Kershaw will be a must-start pitcher for that outing. Kershaw might face the Brewers after that, and he'd be another pretty good option for that contest.
I'm fine adding Kershaw in standard leagues right now, as I think he'll remain a good fantasy option for as long as he stays healthy. Know he's a bit limited from a fantasy perspective, but also know he's capable of producing strong starts despite lower pitch counts.
