Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pitchers to Consider: Justin Verlander and Michael McGreevy Among the Options

Looking at a few waiver wire pitchers to consider adding in fantasy baseball leagues.

After checking out some fantasy baseball waiver wire hitting options, let's now go over some waiver wire pitching options.

We won't include anyone who appeared in Monday's story (including Chase Burns) or who were part of the Tuesday streaming article.

Check out the top fantasy baseball waiver wire options everyday on FantasySP.

Should You Add Justin Verlander?

Verlander is up 7.34% so far today. He's at 38.29% overall now.

He will make a start against the Marlins on Tuesday, so he's a streaming option. Verlander has not faced Miami yet this season across 11 starts.

San Francisco is 4-7 in his starts, and Verlander is 0-4 with a 4.45 earned run average. He's covered 56 2/3 innings so far, allowing 31 runs (28 earned) on 59 hits and 22 walks, while striking out 47 batters.

He's allowed over three earned runs in just two starts this season, but also has allowed three runs three times. Verlander has only failed to reach five innings in three starts, and has at least one walk in every appearance. Verlander has a season high of nine strikeouts, and has five or more Ks on six occasions.

Verlander isn't the pitcher he used to be, but he's doing enough this season to still have some fantasy value. The matchup on Tuesday is what is really appealing to fantasy owners though.

Verlander is worth streaming in deeper leagues today, and I could also talk myself into starting him in standard leagues too, especially after looking at some of the other options for Tuesday. He's not a must-start pitcher in any leagues though, even though he's close to being one in deeper leagues.

Should You Add Ryan Bergert?

Bergert is another streaming option on Tuesday. He's currently rostered in 9% of fantasy leagues and will get to face the Nationals on Tuesday.

He's made starts in his last four appearances for the Padres. Bergert is 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA over 24 innings on the season.

As a starter, Berger hasn't earned a win or loss yet. He's covered 20 innings and has a 2.25 ERA, allowing five runs on 13 hits and nine walks, while punching out 17 batters.

Bergert hasn't faced the Nationals at any point this season, but it's a pretty solid matchup for a fantasy pitcher. Bergert is also a good streaming option because of how he's pitched so far this season.

There are a few things to note if you are looking to start Bergert today. In his four starts, he's topped out at 5 1/3 innings. He hasn't thrown over 90 pitches in any start, and was yanked after 71 pitches in his last outing. Bergert will likely only be near 100 pitches if the Padres have a substantial lead at that point, or if Bergert is working a gem.

He walks a few too many hitters, and that offsets some of the lower hit totals he allows. Bergert has decent strikeout numbers, but an eight-K game is helping those numbers.

I still like the idea of streaming Bergert in some deeper redraft leagues today, but that'd be the extent of the leagues I'd try him out in. Avoid him in standard leagues until he delivers some more positive results, and works deeper into games.

His fantasy ceiling is just too limited right now. Bergert has a solid fantasy floor, but should only be streamed in deeper leagues for the time being.

Should You Add Michael McGreevy?

McGreevy is another streaming option on Tuesday - he'll face a tough test against the Cubs.

McGreevy is up 3.86% and is rostered in 16.18% of leagues right now. Usually the Cubs are not a team to test, but McGreevy has pitched pretty well this season, and he's not owned in that many leagues, so it's not as surprising that he's among the top waiver pickups today.

He's made two starts and three MLB appearances this season. McGreevy worked 5 2/3 innings in relief on May 4, allowing no runs on a hit and walk, while striking out five against the Mets.

McGreevy started against the Dodgers on June 8, allowing four runs on eight hits and no walks, while striking out five. He then tossed five innings against the White Sox on June 19, surrendering a run on three hits and a walk, while striking out five again.

The Dodgers have one of the best lineups in the league, and the Cubs aren't too far behind them, so I'd use that start as a reference going into today's outing. McGreevy will need to work deep into the contest in order to deliver strong fantasy results, and even if he allows three runs, his fantasy score might not be the best.

I understand wanting to stream McGreevy because of his 2.70 ERA so far, but in a tougher matchup, I'd be skeptical of streaming him. I'd be OK streaming McGreevy in some deeper leagues, but would cut things off there.

He's likely to be sent back to the minor leagues again after the start, so this is likely a one-and-done outing for the young pitcher.

Should You Add Frankie Montas?

Montas will make his season debut on Tuesday, making a start against the Braves.

Montas is owned in just 8% of fantasy leagues right now, but I'd expect that to rise before he takes the mound today.

This will be his first-ever start with the Mets, after spending time with the Athletics, Yankees, White Sox, Reds and Brewers over his nine-year career so far. He has a career 4.09 ERA over 744 1/3 innings, and has racked up 760 strikeouts.

Last season in 30 starts between the Reds and Brewers, Montas was 7-11 with a 4.84 ERA. He covered 150 2/3 innings and struck out 148 batters.

His solid strikeout work makes up for a higher ERA, and now he's on a pretty good team overall, so Montas could have a better fantasy outlook now. His first start is a pretty favorable one on paper, but the Braves are still a lineup filled with big names capable of going off at any point.

Across six minor league rehab starts this season, Montas was 0-3 with a 12.05 ERA over 18 2/3 innings. Between that and it being his first start of the season, I don't have super high hopes for Montas today.

He's a better add-and-stash player in deeper leagues today. I'd like to see how Montas fares today before getting him in my lineup, but stashing him on my bench for a start isn't a terrible idea.

Montas could be a big-time waiver pickup if he pitches well on Tuesday, so keep a close eye on his results and react accordingly.

Should You Add Dylan Lee?

Lee is up to 14% rostered. He's enjoying a strong season on the mound, and picked up a save for the Braves on Monday.

It was just his second save of the season, but it's noteworthy after considering Raisel Iglesias' struggles this season. Lee replaced Iglesias with two down in the eighth inning and got the final four outs to secure the save.

Lee has pitched in 36 games so far, covering 35 2/3 innings along the way. He's 1-2 with the two saves, three blown saves and nine holds. Lee has a 1.77 ERA, allowing seven runs (five earned) on 21 hits and eight walks, while punching out 37 batters.

You can see why Lee's own percentage has been trending up, and now with a save, Lee is likely to get even more fantasy attention. This is something worth tracking over the next several days and couple weeks, as Lee could transition into the go-to closer for the Braves.

For now, I'd be willing to add him in a couple more deeper redraft leagues. Another save or two would just help his own percentage keep increasing.

We'll cover fantasy closers later in the week, so check back for that to see if Lee has strengthened his grip on the closer role.
