Chandler Simpson and Jo Adell Among Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Hitters to Target

Looking at a few waiver wire hitters to consider adding in fantasy baseball leagues.

It's time for the second fantasy baseball waiver wire stories of the week.

We'll begin with some hitting options, but not cover anyone who appeared in Monday's article. Also be sure to check out Tuesday's streaming article.

Check out the top fantasy baseball waiver wire options everyday on FantasySP.

Should You Add Chandler Simpson?

Simpson has been added in 5.34% of leagues, bringing his overall mark up to 35.14%.

He's being recalled from Triple-A after surprisingly being sent down in late May.

Simpson played in 35 MLB games earlier this season, getting 133 plate appearances along the way. He had 35 hits (including four doubles) to post a .285 average, and walked six times to tally a .315 on-base percentage. Simpson also had 11 RBIs, 17 runs scored, 19 stolen bases and 14 strikeouts in his time in the big leagues.

His game-changing speed made him a human highlight reel, and a pretty solid fantasy asset. Simpson isn't going to provide a lot of power, but if he can get on base and not strike out a ton, his big stolen base totals can make up for the lack of power.

Hopefully Simpson is able to stick in the big leagues this time around. The uncertainty surrounding him and his MLB status might hold his own percentage back a bit.

I'm fine adding and utilizing Simpson in deeper redraft leagues right now. With a solid average and OBP, not a ton of strikeouts and all those stolen bases, Simpson can be a daily fantasy asset. Him playing the outfield is also a negative for him because there's so many other options out there to choose from.

If he's able to stick in the big leagues and keeps producing at similar levels to his first taste of the big leagues, then Simpson might eventually work into standard redraft leagues. His lack of power is probably going to keep him out of being rostered in all leagues, but he's still worth watching because of his big stolen base totals.

Should You Add Casey Schmitt?

Schmitt has been on a tear at the plate of late, and he's up 4.54% and sits at 15.71% overall now.

During his current four-game hitting streak, Schmitt has nine hits, including a home run and a double. He also has an RBI, five runs scored and a walk and strikeout in that short span.

Schmitt has started five straight games for the Giants, hitting between fifth-seventh in the lineup. The lower he is in the order, the worse off his fantasy outlook is, but if he's hot at the plate, that's kind of a mute point.

He's played first, second and third base and also shortstop at times this season, so it's worth checking what positions he's eligible to play at. Schmitt could be a really versatile fantasy infielder, and that's great for his fantasy outlook, and also his chances of sticking in the lineup in some fashion.

Schmitt has played sparsely over the past two seasons, so we don't really know what to expect from him in an everyday role. He's going to cool off soon, and probably settle back into a reserve role, but that doesn't mean he isn't worth rostering right now.

I'm fine adding and streaming him until his bat cools off in some deeper redraft leagues. It's likely going to be a short-term stint on your fantasy roster, but it's worth pursuing for some of you, especially if you need another fantasy infielder, or just had a player hit the injured list.

Schmitt isn't a must-add player though, so only pick him up if you have an open roster spot, or a replaceable fantasy asset at the end of your bench.

Should You Add Jo Adell?

Adell is up to 44.41% overall after a 3.61% increase today.

Adell is riding a six-game hitting streak, collecting one hit in each contest. He has a double and three homers among the hits, along with five RBIs and runs scored, three walks and six punchouts.

He was batting .184 and getting on base at a .250 clip on May 25, but is up to a .223 average and .296 OBP now. Those numbers still aren't great, but it explains why his own percentage is at what it is now.

He's played in 71 games and gotten 248 plate appearances so far this season. Adell has a .223 average and .296 OBP. He has 16 home runs and eight doubles among his 50 total hits, along with 39 RBIs, 28 runs scored, 15 walks, three stolen bases and 62 strikeouts.

Adell has started in each of the Angels' past five games, hitting fifth and playing right or center field each time. The Angels' lineup isn't good, but Adell has been producing of late, so he's worth adding in some fantasy leagues still.

Even with Adell's improved production over the past couple weeks, I still think he should top out as a deep-league fantasy asset. His pop is enticing, but his low average and bigger strikeout total holds him back from being a great fantasy asset. Again, there's a ton of fantasy outfielders to go around, and I'd be looking elsewhere for help in standard leagues.

Should You Add Nolan Schanuel?

Schanuel is another Angel on the rise. He's up 3.57% and sits at 38.53% overall now.

He went hitless on Monday, but had five hits in the two games before that. Schanuel had five RBIs and two runs scored over those games, while not striking out.

Schanuel has quietly had a pretty solid season. He's hitting .278 and getting on base at a .366 clip over 76 games and 320 plate appearances. Schanuel has six homers, a triple and 15 doubles among his 77 total knocks, along with 30 RBIs, 39 runs scored, 34 walks, three stolen bases and 41 strikeouts.

That's pretty solid fantasy production for the team's everyday first baseman. He's also started five straight games, and bats in a much more favorable No. 2 slot in the order. The Angels' best hitters of course are at the top of the order, so that puts Schanuel in a position to deliver some solid fantasy totals.

I think Schanuel is a pretty underrated fantasy asset this season. Don't believe that? Well, he's the No. 10 fantasy first baseman in points leagues so far, so I think that's a valid statement. He's just outside the top-50 overall fantasy hitters for the season actually.

Him ranking 10th at his position right now not only says he should be owned in all deeper leagues, but that Schanuel could be owned and utilized in a lot of standard leagues as well. Him being near a top-50 fantasy hitter overall means a ton of fantasy owners are incorrectly overlooking him.

Schanuel is a player you could add and utilize in most fantasy leagues today. First base is a loaded position, but the numbers don't lie. Add Schanuel and utilize him until his numbers fall off.

Should You Add Matt McLain?

McLain is owned in 75% of fantasy leagues today. He was below 70% just a couple days ago.

He's had a rough go of things this season, but has collected 13 hits over his past 11 games and 42 plate appearances. McLain has two homers and two doubles among the hits in that span, along with five RBIs, nine runs scored, four walks and seven strikeouts.

I was extremely high on McLain before the season started, but he's been a major disappointment most of the season. He has a .207 average and .304 OBP over 69 games and 277 plate appearances. McLain has seven doubles and nine home runs among his 50 total hits, along with 27 RBIs, 36 runs scored, 11 stolen bases, 29 walks and 79 strikeouts.

If McLain could only up his average, his OBP would likely increase even more, and he'd be a much more solid fantasy asset. McLain has decent numbers overall and seems to be trending in the right direction, so maybe he'll become the fantasy asset I expected him to be after all.

McLain has played second base primarily, and also should have shortstop eligibility. After hitting ninth in his three starts between June 19-21, he's batted second the past two games. That's a major boost for his fantasy outlook, and is part of the reason why he's on the rise now.

McLain is worth keeping an eye on in standard leagues if you don't want to pick him up today. I'm still a believer in him, so I'd take this hot streak as a chance to pick up a potential fantasy difference maker now. He could turn into a daily fantasy asset the rest of the season, but is at least worth streaming in all leagues until he cools off.
