Monday's Top Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pitchers: Should You be Adding Mick Abel After his Strong Debut?

Looking at a few waiver wire pitchers to consider adding in fantasy baseball leagues.

After taking a look at some fantasy baseball waiver wire hitting options, let's now check in on some pitchers.

Also be sure to check out some waiver wire options based on weekly projections, along with the daily streaming article.

Check out the top fantasy baseball waiver wire options everyday on FantasySP.

Should You Add Mick Abel?

Abel has been added in 16.58% of leagues today, bringing his overall mark to 42.39%.

Abel made his MLB debut on Sunday against the lowly Pirates. He tossed six scoreless innings, allowing five hits and no walks. Abel struck out nine batters. He probably could have gone deeper into the contest as well, as he finished at 84 pitches.

Abel was the 15th overall pick of the Phillies in 2020, so it took him longer than expected to reach the big leagues. He's still just 23 years old, and obviously his MLB debut was a very positive one.

He's pitched well at Triple-A this season as well, going 5-2 with a 2.53 earned run average. He has 51 strikeouts over 46 1/3 AAA innings.

Now the big question is whether Abel will remain with the big league team, or be sent back to the minor leagues. The team put Aaron Nola on the 15-day injured list, and Abel was brought up to replace him. At the very least, I'd think Abel gets at least one more start with the big league team, and maybe two if Nola misses his minimum number of days.

If he sticks in the big leagues, a start against the Athletics this week is the most likely outcome for Abel. They are a good enough fantasy matchup to try Abel again in, whether that be in deeper leagues or standard ones.

After his MLB debut, I'd call Abel a must-start pitcher in deeper leagues if he ends up starting against the Athletics. Depending on my standard league team, I'd also consider utilizing Abel in those leagues for that start.

Keep an eye on his status and the team's plan for him as the week progresses. At the very least, Abel at least put himself on the streaming map for whenever he gets another crack at the big leagues.

Should You Add Ben Brown?

Brown is up 11.22% and sits at 41% overall. He is a streaming option on Monday - he will start against a weaker-hitting Marlins' offense.

Brown has made eight starts across nine appearances this season. He's 3-3 and has a 4.75 ERA. Brown has allowed 23 runs (22 earned) on 49 hits and 16 walks over 41 2/3 innings, while striking out 50 batters.

Brown's most recent start was also against Miami. He went 5 1/3 innings in that outing, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks. Brown struck out six batters.

He hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his past three starts. Brown has 19 strikeouts and just two walks in that span, but is just 1-1. He's covered 16 1/3 innings.

I like this matchup for Brown, and a probable start against the Reds later in the week is also a matchup to maybe take advantage of. For tonight's game, I'd be willing to add and start Brown in just about every deeper fantasy league. I don't think his season numbers are good enough to call him a must-start pitcher in standard leagues, but depending on your situation, he's at least an option in those leagues.

I'd only want to start him in deeper leagues against the Reds, if he indeed makes that start later this week. Brown hasn't faced Cincy this season, but the matchup is solid enough to give him another go in deeper leagues.

Should You Add Jose Soriano?

Soriano is up 9.1% and is now rostered in 34.16% of leagues overall. He will start on Monday as well, taking on the Athletics.

Soriano has made nine starts this season, going 2-4 with a 3.46 ERA across 52 innings. He's allowed 23 runs (20 earned) on 53 hits and 23 walks, while also striking out 42 batters.

Soriano has not faced the Athletics yet this season. In three May starts, Soriano has allowed five runs (three earned) on 18 hits and eight walks over 18 innings. He's struck out 16 batters along the way.

His WHIP isn't the best because of all the walks, but he's been able to wiggle out of jams and post decent numbers. The Athletics are a decent enough matchup to consider Soriano, and he has the season-long numbers you are looking for, for the most part at least.

I'd be fine giving him a deep-league start tonight, but would do my best to avoid him in standard leagues. He's just too risky an option with all his walks and high WHIP mark.

He might face the Marlins later in the week, which is a better matchup. Soriano will at least be a deep-league starter for that outing, and depending on how he looks tonight, Soriano might get some streaming starts in standard leagues against Miami.

Should You Add Logan Henderson?

Henderson won't start until Tuesday, but fantasy owners are already adding him. He's rostered in 35.91% of leagues after a 6.38% boost today.

Henderson will face the Orioles on Tuesday, and then has a chance to start against the Pirates at the end of the fantasy week. Those are two fantastic matchups for a fantasy pitcher.

Henderson made his MLB debut on April 20 against the Athletics. He earned the win after striking out nine batters over six innings. Henderson allowed a run on three hits and a walk.

He returned to the big leagues to start against Cleveland on May 14. Henderson earned another win, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over five frames, while striking out seven.

Henderson has looked good early in his MLB tenure. His strikeout upside is really appealing to fantasy owners, and he's proved he can shut down some decent lineups. He might be a bit capped in terms of innings and pitch count (he threw 83 pitches against the Athletics and 72 against the Guardians), but there's enough there to keep rolling with him still.

Henderson is a good deep-league streamer for Tuesday against the Orioles. I wouldn't mind streaming him in some standard leagues, especially if I was desperate for some help. If he looks good in that start, then he'll be a must-start pitcher if he takes on the Pirates later this week - he'd be an even better standard league option than his Tuesday start too.

Should You Add Jordan Romano?

Romano had been trending up already, but his fantasy outlook got a big boost this weekend when Jose Alvarado was suspended 80 games.

Romano is up 9.95% today, bringing his overall mark to 34.16%.

He's appeared in 19 games this season, covering 17 1/3 innings. Romano is 0-1, with five saves, two blown saves and five holds. He has 20 strikeouts and has allowed 15 runs (14 earned) on 18 hits and seven walks.

Just a quick glance at his stats doesn't tell the whole story though. Romano is unscored upon in eight straight appearances. He has four saves and two holds over that span, while allowing three hits and a walk. Romano has 11 punchouts over that span.

He was already earning some late-inning opportunities, and should get a lot more now with Alvarado out for multiple months. He got the save on Sunday against the Pirates.

The Phillies are a pretty good team, so their closer is going to be a solid fantasy asset. Romano's early-season numbers were concerning, but he's settled in and could be about to explode as a fantasy asset.

I'd add him in most deeper leagues right now, and it might only take a day or two for him to be added in standard leagues too. Don't wait too long if you want to add Romano - do it now and beat the crowd.
