Colin Rea and Shelby Miller Among Friday's Top Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pitchers to Add

Looking at a few waiver wire pitchers to consider adding in fantasy baseball leagues.

After looking at waiver wire hitters to possibly add, let's go over some more waiver wire pitchers.

Here are the waiver wire pitcher stories from earlier in the week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We won't talk about any of those pitchers again, and will avoid anyone who was covered in the daily streaming article.

Check out the top fantasy baseball waiver wire options everyday on FantasySP.

Should You Add Gunnar Hoglund?

Hoglund is expected to be called up to make his MLB debut on Friday. He is up 10.22% as of the time of publication, and is rostered in 12.86% of leagues overall.

Hoglund is the Athletics' No. 14 overall prospect. He's 25 years old, throws from the right side and was drafted in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft.

He's got a 55-grade slider, a 50 changeup and a 45 fastball. Hoglund's control is graded at a 60, and he's got a 45 overall mark.

Hoglund has pitched in parts of four minor league seasons now. He's 12-15 with a 3.89 earned run average over 229 1/3 innings. Hoglund has struck out 203 batters, walked just 57 and has a .235 average against him.

He logged 26 Triple-A innings last season, and got 29 2/3 more this season before being called up. This year, Hoglund has a 2.43 ERA, striking out 30 batters, walking seven and having a .226 average against him.

Hoglund appears ready to at least get a taste of the big leagues, and the Athletics are going to start him against the Marlins on Friday. That's a super favorable pitching matchup for Hoglund, so you can see why he's the top waiver pickup.

If he had some MLB innings already under his belt, Hoglund might have been a standard league streamer today. Instead, he's just a deep-league streaming option.

I'd be fine adding and starting Hoglund in a bunch of deep leagues. The matchup is right for him to have a solid debut.

Depending on how he looks in that game, Hoglund might remain in the big leagues or be sent back to Triple-A. He's definitely worth keeping an eye on in case he excels in the big leagues right away. The Athletics have openings for starting pitchers, and Hoglund could absolutely lock down a rotation spot for the rest of the season.

Should You Add Colin Rea?

Rea started on Thursday, but is still on the rise today. He's up 8.17% and is up to 38.22% overall now.

Rea made his fourth start of the season against the Pirates on Thursday. He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings. Rea struck out two and got the win.

In seven appearances overall, Rea has a 2-0 record and 1.46 ERA. He's allowed four runs on 21 hits and five walks, while striking out 21 batters.

Rea has a career 4.41 ERA, so regression is coming, but his spot in the Cubs' rotation looks pretty secure for now, so more starts should be coming for the 34-year-old righty. He's more of an innings eater than a top-end fantasy pitcher, but that gives him value in deeper leagues.

Rea is worth keeping in some deeper leagues for now, and he's at least a deep-league streaming option in every start. In really favorable matchups, Rea could be a standard league streamer.

His next starts could come against the Giants and Marlins. The Giants are a tougher matchup, but the Marlins are a favorable one. If Rea makes those starts, I'd say to utilize him as in deeper leagues against San Fran, then almost all leagues against the Marlins.

Take advantage of things while Rea is hot, instead of waiting to see more strong results. He'll regress as the season progresses, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't be utilized now.

Should You Add Shelby Miller?

In our National League closer report on Thursday, I noted how Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk are both out for the Diamondbacks and wondered who would get save chances for Arizona. Miller got a save on Thursday, so we have an early answer.

Miller is up 6.16% today, bringing his overall mark to 14.81%. Miller has been an elite reliever to open the season, and now that he's getting save chances, his fantasy outlook is much higher.

In 13 appearances, Miller has covered 13 2/3 innings. He hasn't allowed an earned run (one run total) on four hits and four walks, while punching out 15 batters. He's 2-0 and has five saves to go along with his save now. Miller was charged with one blown save this season, but didn't allow a run himself in that one.

Arizona is a good enough team to make the team's closer a good fantasy asset. Miller has already been pitching well, so now would be the time to pick up Miller and utilize him.

The long-term status of Martinez and Puk isn't super clear at this point, so I'd call Miller just a waiver option in deeper leagues for now. If Martinez and Puk are out for extended periods, then Miller could become a standard league option too.

We'll keep tabs on things over the next several days and weeks and update you accordingly.

Should You Add Luis Mey?

Mey was called up to the big leagues on Thursday, replacing Alexis Diaz on the active roster. The hard-throwing prospect made his MLB debut yesterday. He's owned in 1% of fantasy leagues.

Mey worked a scoreless inning against the Cardinals. He faced three batters, striking out one.

Mey is the No. 20 prospect for Cincy. He's 23 years old, was signed in 2018 and throws from the right side.

He has a 70-grade fastball and 55-grade slider. Mey has just a 40 mark for control and overall.

In parts of six minor league seasons, Mey worked 172 1/3 innings over 117 appearances. He's 8-15 with a 5.48 ERA. Mey has 187 punchouts, 135 walks and a .267 average against him.

The big fastball got him to the big leagues, and he could become a high-leverage reliever for years to come. While Diaz was the team's closer coming into the season, Emilio Pagan has taken over that role and pitched well in it, so Mey is just being brought up to provide the Reds with another pen arm, not be the closer.

There's a chance in time Mey could make a claim for the closer role. He'll need to improve his control and not allow many baserunners to steal the job from Pagan.

He's worth keeping tabs on, but is only a fantasy option in the deepest of leagues right now.

Should You Add Jack Leiter?

Leiter is a streaming option on Friday, and will face the Mariners. He's owned in 63% of fantasy leagues right now.

He missed a couple starts earlier in the season, but has been good in his three total starts. Leiter is 2-0 with a 2.03 ERA so far.

Leiter has allowed just three runs on eight hits and five walks, while striking out 13 over 13 1/3 innings. He worked 5 innings against the Red Sox and Reds, allowing just one earned run on six hits and a walk, while punching out 10. In his return to the big league mound, Leiter allowed two runs on two hits and four walks over 3 1/3 innings against the Giants - he struck out three in that contest.

The matchup against the Mariners is a favorable one for Leiter, and I'd be a fan of starting him in deeper leagues at least. I'd consider him in standard leagues as well, but be a bit skeptical of streaming him after his short start last time out.

Until he works a bit deeper in games, Leiter is likely a better deep-league option. He's worth keeping tabs on in case Leiter ups his game moving forward.
