Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Watch: Noelvi Marte and Luke Weaver Among Top Adds to Start Week

Looking at a few waiver wire hitters and pitchers to consider adding in fantasy baseball leagues.

After looking at weekly projections to identify some fantasy baseball waiver wire targets and then looking over drop candidates, let's take a closer look at the FantasySP waiver wire list for some other waiver targets.

We'll look at the top-three picked up hitters on that waiver list, along with the top reliever add.

Check out the top fantasy baseball waiver wire options everyday on FantasySP.

Should You Add Noelvi Marte?

Marte is up 10.76% at the time of publication - he's sitting at 51.68% overall. Marte has already been called up and sent down a couple times this season, but he's red-hot at the plate right now.

In his first five games and 13 plate appearances, Marte had just one hit. In the seven games and 34 plate appearances since, Marte has 15 knocks.

In that hot stretch, Marte has four doubles and three home runs. He's drove in 15 runs, stole three bases, scored six runs, walked twice and struck out on five occasions. Marte is simply one of the hottest hitters in the game right now.

His up-and-down season so far looks a lot like his short MLB career. In 35 games in 2023, Marte had a .316 average and .366 OBP. In 66 games in a suspension-shortened 2024 season, Marte had just a .210 average and .248 OBP.

His career marks of .258 (average) and .301 (on-base percentage) are both solid, but probably just deep-league worthy in fantasy. Right now, Marte is worth a spot in all fantasy leagues.

The question then becomes whether Marte can keep this up or not. He's not going to stay this hot all season, but there's a chance he produces enough at the plate to be a season-long fantasy asset.

For now, Marte needs to be rostered in all deeper redraft leagues. He should be rostered in most dynasty/keeper leagues as well as just a 23-year-old.

I'd be tempted to add Marte in a standard redraft league if I had a roster spot to play with. He's certainly hitting well enough to utilize right now, and he could at least remain a bench option for the season if he matches his career numbers.

He's not quite a must-add player, but he probably deserves to be owned in more fantasy leagues than he currently is. If you don't want to miss out on him, it's probably time to add Marte now.

Should You Add Jorge Polanco?

Polanco is rostered in 54.85% of leagues after a 8.56% increase. He's another hitter who has been hot at the plate.

Polanco is on a five-game hitting streak, collecting eight knocks over those games. He's got two doubles, and most importantly four homers, among those hits. Polanco also has eight RBIs, five runs scored and two walks and strikeouts.

His season-long numbers are also really strong. In 20 games and 75 plate appearances, Polanco has a .377 average and .405 OBP, along with 11 extra-base hits among his 26 total knocks. He has 20 RBIs, a stolen base, three walks, 10 runs scored and just nine strikeouts on the season.

Polanco is a career .265 hitter with a .331 OBP, and those are good enough marks to be a fantasy asset in a lot of leagues. He's coming off a 2024 season in which he hit just .213 and got on base at a .296 clip, so he appears to be bouncing back in his age-31/32 season.

He's eligible at least at second base, but has mostly been the team's designated hitter when in the lineup. Polanco could also be eligible to slot in at third base, and could gain first base eligibility eventually.

Polanco has batted second in three straight contests, all against right-handed pitchers. He sat on the bench for the two games against lefties before that.

Only starting against righties is going to cap Polanco's fantasy ceiling, but he's also a switch hitter, so with more strong hitting, Polanco could start earning more starts, regardless of what starting pitcher is opposing the team.

Polanco should definitely be owned in all deeper redraft leagues at this point, and could be another standard league option with how well he's hitting of late. I personally prefer the upside of Marte, or the next waiver hitter more, but could understand adding Polanco if the other two hitters in this story are unavailable.

I think Polanco is going to top out as a deep-league option more often than not. There's no denying his season-long numbers though, so you might as well utilize him in those leagues while he's hot.

Should You Add Agustin Ramirez?

Ramirez was added in 6.46% of fantasy leagues, bringing his overall mark to 45.85%.

Ramirez has been great since being called up to the big leagues. In five games and 21 plate appearances, he's collected nine hits, including four doubles and three home runs. Ramirez has five RBIs, a stolen base, four runs scored and two walks and strikeouts so far.

The right-handed hitting catcher has been batting third or fourth when he's started. Being a catcher, he's going to get off days occasionally, but he's also been starting as the designated hitter to keep his hot bat in the lineup.

I was pretty high on Ramirez in dynasty leagues over the years, and he's gotten off to a strong start. Dynasty owners have to be thrilled with the early returns with him.

He's quickly seen his own percentage rise in redraft leagues as well. Ramirez was barely owned in any fantasy leagues synced at FantasySP before being called up on April 21. A 45% rise in a week should tell you how great Ramirez has been as a fantasy hitter.

I'd say Ramirez is a must-own player in deeper redraft leagues already. He's hitting in a favorable spot in the lineup and can mash, so even though he's on a bad offense overall, Ramirez can still deliver enough for those fantasy owners.

Ramirez is someone I'd highly consider adding in standard redraft leagues as well. He's at a weak fantasy catcher spot, which helps his cause, and he's going to play plenty in Miami, so there's a chance he remains a good fantasy asset all season.

Unless you are absolutely stacked with your fantasy catchers, Ramirez should be added in some standard leagues as well. He can start at an extra hitting slot while he's hot, and he could remain a solid backup option for the remainder of the season too.

I'd rather take the gamble on Ramirez now, even if you don't want to start him, than watch another leaguemate scoop him up and enjoy his fantasy success the rest of the season. Add Ramirez before it's too late.

Should You Add Luke Weaver?

Weaver was added in 5.3% of leagues, bringing his overall mark to 67.7%. He's been named the Yankees' closer with Devin Williams struggling mightily to start the season.

Weaver was already a good fantasy asset because of his strikeout work and ERA a season ago. He's been great in primarily the setup role this season.

Weaver has appeared in 12 games so far. He's failed to earn a win, but has also avoided a loss. Weaver has two saves and six holds across 14 scoreless innings. He's allowed three hits and five walks, while striking out 14 batters.

You can see why Weaver was already a fantasy asset, and now with the chance he earns some saves, his own percentage is on the rise.

If you combine his past two seasons, Weaver is 7-3 with a 2.48 earned run average across 98 innings. He's struck out 117 batters over that span. Those numbers show he absolutely could be a closer, and maybe hold that job all season if he is able to lock down saves.

He needs to be added in deeper redraft leagues, and I'd also be fine adding him in standard redraft leagues. He could be swapped out for Williams in some cases.

We'll keep an eye on the Yankees' closer situation and update you next most likely in the closer report stories.
