Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Best Hitter Pickups for Wednesday
Adley Rutschman headlines this group of waiver wire hitters, joined by rising options like Colson Montgomery and Garrett Mitchell.
After taking a look at some fantasy baseball waiver wire/streaming pitching options, let's go over some hitters.
Here are our waiver wire stories on hitters from Monday and Tuesday.
Fantasy baseball waiver wire options can be found all season on FantasySP!
Adley Rutschman - Baltimore Orioles
Rutschman is rostered in 80% of fantasy leagues at the moment. He just returned from the injured list, so that mark is too low.
Rutschman missed 11 days, but was back in the lineup on Tuesday, hitting third and catching. He had two hits in his first game back, including a homer. Rutschman had two RBIs, a run scored and a strikeout.
Over 11 games and 43 plate appearances, Rutschman owns a .316 average and .395 on-base percentage. He has 12 hits, including six doubles and that homer, plus five RBIs, four runs scored, five walks and seven strikeouts.
It's been a good start to the season for Rutschman, who really struggled in 2025. He might not keep up the marks he has now, but Rutschman can be a high-end fantasy catcher, so he's worth adding and holding in all leagues - don't miss the chance to add him for free.
Miguel Vargas and Colson Montgomery - Chicago White Sox
Vargas sits near 36% owned, which is up from 33% two days ago. Montgomery is up to 62% owned - he was at 57% two days ago.
Vargas has three hits over his past two games, and two of those knocks are home runs. He has five hits over his past five games, but bad numbers overall.
He's got a .177 average, but a .320 OBP over 22 games and 97 plate appearances so far. Vargas has three doubles, four homers and a triple among his 14 knocks, plus 11 RBIs, 14 runs scored, three stolen bases, 15 walks and 15 strikeouts.
The OBP is good, but his average is really weak. If he could just up that a bit, while keeping his OBP, he'd be a pretty solid fantasy asset.
Right now, Vargas is just worth deep-league fantasy ownership/utilization. If he keeps delivering hits, he could be scooped up in standard leagues. Him being eligible at first and third base is a plus, so keep him in mind if his bat heats up a bit.
Montgomery is on a four-game hitting streak, with six knocks over that span. He has a homer in three straight games, and two doubles in that span.
Overall, Montgomery has a .213 average and .323 OBP over 23 games and 93 plate appearances. He has six homers and five doubles among his 17 total hits, plus 16 RBIs, nine runs scored, a stolen base, nine walks and 30 strikeouts.
He has a low average and too many strikeouts, but his OBP makes him a fantasy asset. Again, he's a better deep-league asset, but when he's hot at the plate, like he is now, he can be used in standard leagues. Utilize him for a bit if you have a need for a third baseman or shortstop (or infielder).
Ildemaro Vargas - Arizona Diamondbacks
Vargas is now at 27% rostered, and has been steadily rising since April 9, when he was at just 2%.
Vargas continues to deliver for the D-Backs. He has at least one hit in all 16 of his appearances, and 22 hits overall. Vargas has five doubles, three homers, a triple, 11 RBIs, 12 runs scored, two walks and only eight strikeouts across 64 plate appearances.
He's played first and second base, shortstop and left field this season. Vargas could be eligible at several spots from past seasons too.
Vargas is a sneaky-good fantasy asset, and is worth more deep-league ownership. Try him out while he's still playing regularly and delivering every game.
Garrett Mitchell - Milwaukee Brewers
Mitchell is rostered in 25% of fantasy leagues. He was around 23% the past couple days.
He owns a .273 average and .437 OBP over 20 games and 72 plate appearances so far. Mitchell has 15 knocks, including four doubles, a triple and a home run. He also has 16 walks, 10 runs scored, 18 RBIs, four stolen bases and 27 strikeouts.
He doesn't start every game, usually sitting against left-handed starting pitchers, so that holds his fantasy ceiling down a bit. He's still producing enough to own/utilize in most deeper leagues.
Him getting on base often is a huge plus, and he's in a run-producing spot in the order usually, so that's good too. Add and utilize Mitchell as he's excelling on the field early in 2026. Hopefully we get a full season out of the oft-injured player, because he can be a good fantasy asset.
