Monday's Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pitching Targets: Adrian Houser, Mick Abel or Someone Else?
Looking at a few waiver wire pitchers to consider adding in fantasy baseball leagues.
After looking at some fantasy baseball waiver wire hitters to possibly add, let's go over some waiver wire pitchers.
We won't include anyone who appeared in Monday's streaming article.
Check out the top fantasy baseball waiver wire options everyday on FantasySP.
Should You Add Adrian Houser?
Houser is up 6.77% today, bringing his overall mark to 29.97%.
Houser made his third start of the season on June 1, and delivered another quality start. He took the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk over 6 1/3 innings, but also struck out six batters.
Houser has made three starts since signing with the White Sox. He's 1-1 with a 1.47 earned run average over 18 1/3 innings. Houser has allowed three runs on 13 hits and five walks, while striking out 14 batters.
He's faced the Mariners, Mets and Orioles now, so it's not like Houser is facing really weak-hitting teams. Houser has a career 4.13 ERA over parts of nine big league seasons, so he's bound to regress at some point, but he's pitched very well so far this season.
Houser is worth adding in a few more deeper leagues for the time being. His next two probable starts could be against the Royals and Astros. With how Houser has pitched so far, I'd be willing to start him in deeper leagues for both of those contests - he also might be a decent standard league streamer depending on who else is pitching those days.
Houser is probably going to top out as a deep-league fantasy option, but he's at least worth keeping tabs on in case he keeps excelling with the White Sox.
Should You Add Charlie Morton?
Morton opposed Houser on Sunday, and picked up the win. Morton has been added in 6.34% of leagues today as a result - he's at 26.61% overall now.
Morton worked 6 2/3 innings on Sunday to pick up his second win of the season. He allowed an unearned run on six hits and a walk, while punching out seven batters.
Morton has won back-to-back starts, and has really been trending up for his past several outings. He hasn't allowed over three earned runs in any of his past nine starts. Morton is 2-2 with a 3.27 ERA over 33 innings in that stretch. He's allowed 14 runs (12 earned) on 27 hits and 12 walks, while striking out 31 batters.
His season-long numbers are not nearly as good, which shows how poorly he pitched in March and early April. Morton is 2-7 over 14 appearances (eight starts). He's allowed 39 runs (37 earned) on 58 hits and 27 walks, while striking out 52 batters.
Many fantasy owners thought Morton had run out of gas with how he was pitching early on this season. He's turned back the clock though, and is looking like a decent fantasy asset for the time being.
Morton has upcoming starts against the Athletics and Angels, which are both pretty favorable on paper. That's probably another reason why his own percentage is trending up now.
If Morton starts against both teams, he's at least worth streaming in deeper leagues. Depending on other options available those days, and your overall opinions on Morton and those opponents, the pitcher could be unleashed in standard redraft leagues as a streamer too.
I personally like Morton better as a deep-league option, but while he's excelling on the hill, I wouldn't mind utilizing him in standard leagues too.
Should You Add Dustin May?
May has been added in 4.87% of leagues - he's owned in 62.2% of leagues overall now.
May will start on Monday against the Mets. That's not a very favorable matchup on paper, but May is talented enough to shut down any lineup.
May had an up-and-down month of May. Over five starts, he allowed four runs twice and then three, two and one run(s) once each. May went 2-3 over his five starts and had a 4.45 ERA over 28 1/3 innings. He struck out 36 batters, which was a positive, but the fairly short starts held him back a bit.
May hasn't faced the Mets yet this season, so we don't have anything to go on there. He's allowed just four runs over his past two starts, which spans 11 innings. May has 17 strikeouts over those two games, so it makes sense to see him as a streaming add today.
I personally would only feel good streaming May in deeper redraft leagues today against the Mets. I just haven't seen enough consistency with May to trust him in this matchup. It's a light day of MLB action though, so I understand if you want to start May in a standard redraft league - I'd just do my best to avoid him.
Should You Add Mick Abel?
Abel is reportedly being called up to start on Thursday for the Phillies, so he's already getting added again in fantasy leagues. He's up 3.58% and is now rostered in 28.38% of leagues.
Abel made his MLB debut on May 18 against the Pirates. All he did was toss six shutout innings. Abel allowed five hits and no walks, while striking out nine batters.
The 23-year-old righty will take on the Blue Jays in his Thursday start. Toronto isn't Pittsburgh, but that's a favorable enough matchup to roll with Abel in a lot of fantasy leagues.
I'm all for adding Abel in deeper redraft leagues. He should be streamed in those leagues on Thursday, and hopefully he stays up in the big leagues after that. If he does, Abel can remain rostered in all deeper leagues, as long as his results on the mound are solid.
I'd also say Abel is worth streaming in some standard leagues on Thursday. There's 12 MLB games that day, so streaming options will be available, but Abel should be among the better options. If you need a streamer for that day, I'd be more than willing to give Abel a chance.
Should You Add Chris Paddack?
Paddack has been added in 4.74% of fantasy leagues today. He's up to 38.07% rostered overall.
Paddack started against the Mariners on Sunday. He took a no decision despite allowing just one run over eight innings. Paddack surrendered four hits and a walk, while striking out 10 batters.
Across 12 starts and 65 1/3 innings this season, Paddack is 2-5 with a 3.58 ERA. He's allowed 28 runs (26 earned) on 54 hits and 20 walks, while striking out 50 batters.
His strikeouts might not be super high, and his win-loss record isn't great, but he's trending up and has a pretty solid ERA for the year yet. Paddack hasn't allowed over three runs in a start since his first two outings of the season.
Paddack is 2-4, but with a 2.17 ERA over 58 innings in his past 10 starts. He's allowed 15 runs (14 earned) on 41 hits and 14 walks, while striking out 46 batters.
Paddack's fantasy value is being diminished by his team's offensive woes behind him. He's been one of the better fantasy pitchers out there, mostly because he's limiting runs, but also because he's working pretty deep into some starts.
Paddack is undervalued and deserves to be picked up in more deeper redraft leagues. Upcoming starts against the Blue Jays and Rangers are favorable enough to not only stream him in deeper leagues, but also heavily consider him in standard leagues.
Don't overlook Paddack because of his win-loss record, because he's been one of the better fantasy arms in the game for a while now.
