Patrick Corbin | Fantasy Outlook

Patrick Corbin transitions to long relief as ratio struggles persist

Corbin has faced significant challenges lately, posting a 7.50 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP over his last 30 days of action. While he recently recorded a rare five-inning save, he is currently serving as the primary long reliever for a fifth-place Blue Jays team that sits at 45-51 and is looking to snap a two-game losing streak. Despite several injuries to the Toronto rotation, including Max Scherzer, Corbin remains outside of the primary five-man starting staff.

The veteran's current season ERA of 5.28 is a close reflection of his recent career trajectory, and our models expect him to hover around a 4.96 ERA for the remainder of the year. While his 1.24 strikeouts per inning show he still has some swing-and-miss stuff, his high 1.54 WHIP confirms that he is allowing too much traffic to be a reliable fantasy asset. His recent cold streak appears to be more of a baseline than a fluke given his historical performance over the last few seasons.

Toronto has a three-game home stand against the White Sox this weekend, but Corbin is not scheduled for a start, as the rotation will feature Spencer Miles, Shane Bieber, and Trey Yesavage. Without a guaranteed start and facing a Chicago team that is 50-45 and riding a three-game win streak, Corbin offers very little upside this week. His role as a bulk reliever makes it difficult to project meaningful counting stats or quality appearances. Sit.
