Opening Day Sparks Waiver Wire Frenzy: Top Fantasy Baseball Adds
Opening Day performances are already shifting the waiver wire landscape—here are the top adds to consider.
Most MLB teams have played their first games, and the ones who haven't play today. That makes it a good time for another waiver wire/streaming article!
Here are the stories we did on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Even if we covered players earlier in the week, I might hit on them here, especially if there are big-time risers today.
Fantasy baseball waiver wire options can be found all season on FantasySP!
JJ Wetherholt - St. Louis Cardinals
Wetherholt is up a whopping 19.53% today, bringing his overall mark to 75.81%.
Wetherholt made his MLB debut on Thursday, playing second base and batting first. He had four at-bats, homering for his lone hit. Wetherholt had two RBIs and struck out once.
It was a good start for the highly-regarded prospect. Wetherholt will rise in a hurry if he keeps delivering, and after how he started, I love the idea of adding him if you still can.
Wetherholt could be one of the top fantasy players at second base as a rookie. He's not part of a very good team, but batting first will give him a good fantasy outlook.
Add the youngster and enjoy his rookie season.
Chase DeLauter - Cleveland Guardians
DeLauter is owned in 48.37% of leagues, which is up 7.44% from yesterday.
DeLauter had quite the Opening Day, homering twice among his three hits and five at-bats. He drove in two runs and struck out once.
DeLauter hit second and played right field for Cleveland. Hitting between Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez could be one of the best fantasy situations out there, so I love the idea of adding DeLauter.
DeLauter has been on the rise all week, and after his first game, he should rise a bunch more. Sure, he won't homer twice every game, but I love his outlook for 2026.
Get him added in deeper leagues and some standard leagues, and be ready to add him in more standard leagues if he keeps delivering at the plate.
Mike Burrows - Houston Astros
Burrows has been added in 6.97% of leagues, bringing his overall mark to 50.23%.
Burrows is the first and only pitcher we will be discussing today. He will be starting against the Angels tonight, which is a pretty good matchup, at least for now.
Burrows has spent the first two years of his big league career in Pittsburgh. Most of his stats are from 2025, when he pitched 96 frames and had a 3.94 earned run average.
He's on a better team now, so it's fair to expect some better results for Burrows. Add that on top of a good matchup and Burrows is a nice streaming asset for the day.
Give me some consideration in standard leagues, and definitely fire him up in some deeper leagues.
Kevin McGonigle - Detroit Tigers
McGonigle is up 6.2% today and he now sits at 74.42% overall.
McGonigle is another highly-regarded prospect who starred on Opening Day. Across five at-bats, McGonigle posted four hits. He also drove in two runs. Among the hits, McGonigle doubled twice.
It was about as perfect of an MLB debut as one could have. He started at third base and batted sixth - he might not stick that low in the order if he keeps hitting like this.
Anyways, McGonigle flashed some of that high potential in his first MLB regular season game. It's a great sign, and means he could emerge as a big-time fantasy asset right away.
He should be added in all deeper leagues already, and McGonigle should be added in a bunch of standard leagues as well. If he keeps hitting, his own percentage should surge toward 100% in a hurry, so be ready to pounce if you aren't ready to add McGonigle today.
Carson Benge - New York Mets
Benge is rostered in 47.91% of leagues, which is up 2.79% from yesterday.
Benge is another rookie who made his debut on Thursday. He homered among his three at-bats and also walked twice. Benge did strike out twice, but he made up for that with the walks, and he added a stolen base too.
Benge started in right field and hit eighth for the Mets. He should have a clearer path to playing time with Mike Tauchman out for several weeks with an injury. Benge might be part of a platoon though, so I wouldn't add him quite as quickly as I would Wetherholt, DeLauter or McGonigle.
If Benge keeps delivering, and starting, then he can be scooped up in all fantasy leagues. He's going to be one to track and monitor, so keep close tabs on him if you aren't willing to pick him up today.
