Fantasy Baseball Impact: Breaking Down Wednesday’s Three MLB Signings

The NBA has stolen most of the sports headlines over the last couple days with all the trades being made. The MLB had a couple notable deals go down on Wednesday, so let's cover them all here.

We will cover the Framber Valdez, Miguel Andujar and Isiah Kiner-Falefa deals.

Signing Details and Stats

Valdez was the big signing, landing a three-year deal worth $115 million. He signed with Detroit.

Andujar signed a one-year pact with the Padres for $4 million. Kiner-Falefa agreed to a one-year deal worth $6 million with the Red Sox.

Valdez is a 32-year-old left-handed pitcher who was arguably the top free agent pitcher on the market.

Over eight MLB seasons (all with Houston) he posted a 3.36 earned run average and an 81-52 record over 188 games (166 starts). Valdez has 1,053 strikeouts over 1,080 2/3 innings.

Andujar can play a couple spots - he's been at third base and left field most often over his nine-year career, but also has appeared at first base and right field. The nearly 31-year-old will be joining his fifth team.

Andujar has a career .282 average and .315 on-base percentage. He has 474 total hits over 1,780 plate appearances, including 53 home runs, 96 doubles and six triples. Andujar has 223 RBIs, 197 runs scored, 13 stolen bases, 78 walks and 276 strikeouts.

Kiner-Falefa is 30 years old and will be joining his fifth team as well. He has played all over the field, but most often at shortstop and third base. He also has logged time at catcher, second base and all three outfield spots.

Over 3,370 plate appearances, Kiner-Falefa has a .262 average and .311 OBP. Across his 815 hits, he has 130 doubles, 36 homers and 16 triples. IKF also has 286 RBIs, 371 runs scored, 100 stolen bases, 180 walks and 530 strikeouts.

Outlook for the Tigers

Valdez is a big-time addition for Detroit and gives the team a stellar 1-2 punch, as long as Tarik Skubal is retained. 

Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize and Reese Olson are the other projected members of the starting rotation. That's a really good starting five, and if they stay healthy, could be one of the top rotations in baseball.

Jackson Jobe will be an option down the line, and maybe at the end of the 2026 regular season. Ty Madden, Troy Melton, Keider Montero and Sawyer Gipson-Long are additional starting options.

Detroit needed another starter, and Valdez is about as good of an option as there was available. Him landing with the Tigers doesn't alter his fantasy outlook much, and he should still be a high-end fantasy pitcher.

The move will help Detroit in its quest for a postseason spot and deep playoff run. Again, if that rotation stays healthy, then the Tigers could make some noise this coming season.

Outlook for the Padres

Andujar is a good pickup for San Diego, which lengthens its lineup and creates some versatility with this move. 

Andujar is the projected designated hitter, but he probably will help spell players at several spots. He is projected to hit eighth, which isn't ideal for a fantasy hitter, but in a loaded lineup, anyone in that order could be a good fantasy asset.

Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill, Manny Machado and Ramon Laureano are the projected 1-4 hitters, and could help drive Andujar in if he's getting on base enough at the bottom of the order.

Gavin Sheets and Luis Campusano are in a projected platoon at the No. 5 spot in the order. Xander Bogaerts and Jake Cronenworth are also quality hitters expected to bat before Andujar - again that's a plus for Andujar. Freddy Fermin is a solid No. 9 hitter and will be the lead catcher most likely.

There's a ton of talent in that lineup, which should help San Diego make some noise in the National League. They still are a couple steps behind the Dodgers, but that lineup is going to be tough to slow down.

Andujar is set up to be a nice fantasy asset, and will be a very affordable pick in fantasy drafts for 2026. He could become a daily starter in all leagues if he starts daily and gets on base enough.

Everyone in the Padres' lineup gets a slight bump up from the Andujar signing as well. It doesn't drastically alter the outlook or draft stock of anyone, but it does slightly help.

Will Wagner, Sung-Mun Song and Bryce Johnson are the projected bench bats, alongside whoever sits in the platoon. None of those guys were very good fantasy assets, so the signing really doesn't alter things negatively for too many hitters.

The signing could slow the call up process for some prospects, but that's about it. The deal is a pretty safe one, and should only help the Padres in 2026.

Outlook for the Red Sox

Kiner-Falefa is in a projected platoon at third base with Marcelo Mayer right now. IKF can play all over the place, so I could see him still starting most days, just at different spots - him being a right-handed hitter works against him a bit though.

I just don't think Boston would shell out $6 million for a player not to play very often, so I think Kiner-Falefa will be playing more than one would expect out of a projected platoon player.

Roman Anthony, Trevor Story, Jarren Duran and Willson Contreras are the projected 1-4 hitters in the lineup. Wilyer Abreu and Carlos Narvaez are the next two before the projected platoon with Mayer and Kiner-Falefa. Romy Gonzalez and Ceddanne Rafaela are the projected 8 and 9 hitters.

Connor Wong, David Hamilton and Masataka Yoshida are the projected bench bats for now.

It's a decent lineup, but several hitters will have to overperform for the Boston offense to be one of the league's best. The starting rotation is what is going to carry the Red Sox in 2026.

I don't love the landing spot for Kiner-Falefa, and his fantasy outlook won't be great to open the season as a result. He will likely just be a deep-league fantasy asset as a result, but a big showing in spring training could change his outlook.

His signing will hurt playing time for others too, with Mayer, Gonzalez and others in that mix. It's a good move in the real world for the Red Sox, but it's mostly a detriment to fantasy outlooks.

Kristian Campbell maybe loses a big league roster spot as a result, and it could slow the call up process for several other Boston prospects.

Injuries could change things, and maybe the projections aren't what actually happens, so the Red Sox will be a team to watch during spring training.
