Marcelo Mayer nears Giants debut after successful minor league rehab assignment

Mayer is closing in on his Giants debut after being acquired from Boston and working back from a forearm stress reaction that has sidelined him since late June. The 23-year-old infielder began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento and homered in his first contest. With fourth-place San Francisco sitting at 52-74, the organization plans to give him every opportunity to earn everyday playing time across the infield.

Prior to the injury, Mayer posted a .220 batting average with three home runs over 70 games in Boston during a frustrating stretch. Our projections anticipate positive regression toward a .243 average with double-digit home run power over a full campaign. His pedigree as a premier prospect combined with guaranteed at-bats makes him an intriguing rest-of-season upside stash once healthy.

San Francisco concludes its road set in Cleveland against Gavin Williams (3.80 ERA) before a weekend series in Boston featuring matchups against Sonny Gray (2.65 ERA) and Patrick Sandoval (4.76 ERA). While Mayer could rejoin the active roster in Boston, fantasy managers should keep him benched until he is formally activated. Sit.
