Fantasy Baseball Reaction: Mets Gamble on Luis Robert Jr.

Robert lengthens the Mets’ lineup, while Luisangel Acuna and Chicago’s young core gain clearer fantasy paths.

After a couple quieter days for the MLB, things ramped back up with a trade between the White Sox and Mets. Let's go over that trade, looking at real world and fantasy baseball implications.

The Mets sent Luisangel Acuna and Truman Pauley to the White Sox for Luis Robert Jr.

Player Stats

Robert is the big-name player in the deal. He has played six seasons in the big leagues, but has accumulated just 577 games (going over 110 games just once).

He owns a career .259 average and .313 on-base percentage. Robert has 565 total hits, including 102 home runs, 115 doubles and two triples. He also has 298 RBIs, 318 runs scored, 102 stolen bases, 149 walks and 112 strikeouts.

Robert is coming off a season in which he played 110 games. He had a .223 average and .297 OBP, along with 53 RBIs, 52 runs scored, 33 stolen bases, 40 walks and 112 strikeouts. Robert had 85 total hits, including 14 home runs and 12 doubles.

Acuna has played in 109 big league games over the past two seasons. The 23-year-old has a career .248 average and .299 OBP.

Acuna has 53 hits to his name, including nine doubles, a triple and three homers. He has 14 RBIs, 36 runs scored, 16 stolen bases, 14 walks and 37 strikeouts.

Pauley is a 22-year-old pitching prospect. The right-handed hurler has one minor league season under his belt, working just 4 1/3 innings in A-ball.

Pauley made three appearances, allowing a run on four walks and no hits, while striking out three batters.

Robert's Outlook

Robert solidifies the center field spot for the Mets, but is likely to bat near the bottom of the order.

He has some decent numbers over his career, but has been one of the more overrated players (especially in fantasy) over the past few years in my eyes. Missed games are an issue, but we'll see if he suddenly finds a way to be healthy all year now that he's with a better team.

If Robert stays healthy, he could definitely have some fantasy upside, even if he's near the bottom of the team's order. All he really needs to do is get on base, and he'll have a chance to score a ton of runs with a loaded top of the order coming up after him.

The thing I worry about is his fantasy outlook and draft value skyrocketing after joining a better team. I already think he's been overrated, and I don't see a trade to the Mets slowing the hype train. I'm going to need to see his average draft position before being able to call him a good draft option or not.

What I can say now is that I wouldn't put too much stock into Robert, meaning he wouldn't be viewed as an everyday fantasy outfield option. He could become that, but I'd want a backup plan in case Robert gets hurt, or doesn't deliver.

Mets' Outlook

Like I said a bit ago, the trade solidifies the team's center field spot.

It lengthens the Mets' lineup, and just makes the New York offense that much more formidable. Robert is going to have to deliver closer to his career averages to really make this deal worth it though.

It helps the fantasy outlook for several players. Hitters like Jorge Polanco, Marcus Semien, Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty and Mark Vientos are helped with a decent hitter now coming up after them.

Carson Benge and Tyrone Taylor are a couple players projected to be in a platoon, and hitting after Robert, who could also be helped out a bit for the days they are in the lineup.

Then, Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto and Bo Bichette are primed for a few more RBI chances because Robert is hitting at the bottom of the order.

Robert might not be the best hitter, and overrated to me and others, but his addition to the Mets is going to help the team's chances, and fantasy player's outlooks at least a bit.

Outlooks for Acuna and Pauley

The trade for Acuna helps the youngster out. He's projected to be the starting center fielder in Chicago, effectively replacing Robert.

He might hit in the bottom third of the order, but regular playing time is possible now, and that could lead to fantasy relevance. Acuna should open the year as a deep-league fantasy option, and could eventually work into standard leagues with decent results while on the field.

Pauley is not a top-30 ranked prospect for the White Sox, but he could get there eventually. He was a 12th-round pick of the Mets in 2025.

With his age, he could be a quick riser through the minor leagues, especially if he's excelling while on the hill. Being in the White Sox' organization gives Pauley a much easier path to the big leagues.

He's a couple years from a MLB callup probably, but this trade works in his favor in the long run, so we'll see if he can ever develop into anything promising.

White Sox' Outlook

Robert was a big name in the White Sox' lineup, but trading him away opened the door for other younger players to get a few more plate appearances over the course of the year.

Right now, Chase Meidroth is projected to be atop the lineup, with Kyle Teel, Colson Montgomery and Miguel Vargas rounding out the top four. Teel is in a projected platoon, but as a lefty, he should be out there plenty if he's indeed in a platoon.

Andrew Benintendi is another guy in a projected platoon, as is Brooks Baldwin. Munetaka Murakami, Acuna and Edgar Quero are the other projected members of the starting lineup. Lenyn Sosa, Derek Hill and Everson Pereira are the other projected platoon players, with Korey Lee being another option at catcher.

There won't be many high-end fantasy draft assets among the White Sox' hitters, but with regular playing time, anyone could become a daily option. Vargas was the team's top fantasy hitter in points leagues last season, with Benintendi and Sosa as the next best options.

I'll be looking at some of the younger hitters to take a step forward this season. I have my eyes on Meidroth, Teel, Montgomery, Acuna and Quero in particular.

With not many expectations, I'm looking forward to how these younger White Sox' hitters deliver. I'm not saying that they are going to be a force to be reckoned with or help push the team toward the playoffs, but they could be a nuisance, and fantasy assets along the way.

The problem is likely going to be the team's pitching staff. That's part of the reason why Pauley has a decent outlook in the long run.

But all in all, moving on from Robert alleviates the team of an overpriced veteran, and opens the door for younger hitters to be a bigger part of the offense. I'll be keeping my eyes on the White Sox, especially early on, to see who might be worth adding in various fantasy leagues.
