Should You Add Yu Darvish?
Darvish is up 3.3% today and is now rostered in 54.11% of leagues synced through FantasySP.
He's set to make his season debut on Monday, taking on the Diamondbacks on Monday night.
Darvish appeared in 16 games last season for the Padres, going 7-3 with a 3.31 earned run average over 81 2/3 innings. He has a career 3.58 ERA over 1,706 innings, and averages 10.6 strikeouts per inning, although he had just 8.6 Ks per nine innings last year.
The matchup against the D-Backs isn't that good on paper. Darvish is being added more because of what he's done over his career, and because he's still a big-name fantasy pitcher.
I like the idea of adding Darvish in a lot of fantasy leagues. At 38 years old, his best pitching days are probably in the past, but he's still worth starting in a good amount of matchups nowadays.
Making his first big league start of the season, I'd only feel real comfortable starting him in deeper leagues today. The matchup isn't great either, so I'd tread carefully with Darvish today.
However, I could also justify adding and starting Darvish in standard leagues. Only 20 MLB teams are in action tonight, so streaming choices are limited. The veteran is bumped up a couple notches as a result, and maybe he can deliver a good fantasy score if you aren't thrilled about any other streaming options.
Should You Add Trevor Story?
Story is owned in 61.1% of leagues after a 4.14% increase today.
He has played in 87 games and logged 357 plate appearances so far this season. Story has a .252 average and .292 on-base percentage, along with 53 RBIs, 44 runs scored, 14 stolen bases, 16 walks and 101 strikeouts. Story has 14 home runs and 11 doubles among his 85 total hits.
Story is on an eight-game hitting streak and has collected 15 hits over that stretch. He has three homers and four doubles among the hits, along with 12 RBIs, nine runs scored, three stolen bases, two walks and just three strikeouts.
Story has proved to be a very streaky hitter this season. He's had hot stretches where he's been one of the top fantasy hitters in the games, and other times where he wasn't even startable in the deepest of leagues.
Right now, Story is red hot at the plate, and that makes him a fantasy option in all formats. I'd say he's a must-add player in deeper leagues right now. He can be added and started in those leagues for a while, and he probably should remain rostered in deeper leagues for the remainder of the season after seeing a few of his hot stretches this season.
I'd be for adding and starting Story in some standard leagues too. He's not a must-add hitter in those leagues, but he's definitely an option for those of you lacking at shortstop, or simply needing an extra infielder or hitter for a little while. He's not a long-term add in those leagues, so watch Story's progress and move on from him after his bat cools off.
Should You Add Michael Busch?
Busch has been added in 3.74% of leagues and is up to 84.49% overall.
Busch had an unreal weekend at the plate, collecting nine hits over 14 plate appearances. He had four homers and two doubles among the hits, along with a walk, hit by pitch, six runs scored and RBIs, and three strikeouts.
He has played in 84 games and logged 318 plate appearances this season. Busch has a .297 average and .384 OBP, along with 56 RBIs, 44 runs scored, four stolen bases, 33 walks and 72 strikeouts. Busch has 15 doubles, three triples and 18 home runs among his 83 total knocks.
Busch has started the past five games for the Cubs. He's been between fifth-seventh in the order. Busch has faced two lefties over that stretch, so him not sitting against lefties is massive for his fantasy outlook and value.
The team's primary first baseman is enjoying a breakout season, and doesn't show any signs of slowing down. He can be a little streaky at times, but he's produced pretty well most of the season.
Busch should be rostered and utilized in all deeper leagues at this point. He should at least remain rostered in those leagues all season.
Busch is a good standard league option as well. He's ranked seventh among first basemen in fantasy points leagues this season, so that suggests he should be owned and starting in standard leagues right now.
His big weekend bumped him up several spots though, and Busch isn't going to stay that hot all season obviously. For the time being, Busch is a great option in all fantasy leagues, and I'd take advantage of his hot bat while I could.
Should You Add Ceddanne Rafaela?
Rafaela is up 2.3% and sits at 57.72% overall now.
He has eight hits over a four-game hitting streak. Rafaela has two homers and five doubles among the hits, along with five RBIs and runs scored, no walks and a strikeout.
He's logged 319 plate appearances over 86 games this season. Rafaela has a .264 average and .307 OBP. He has 20 doubles, two triples and 11 home runs among his 78 total hits, along with 38 RBIs, 50 runs scored, 11 stolen bases, 15 walks and 62 strikeouts.
Rafaela has been in the starting lineup for each of the team's past six games. He's mostly hit ninth in the order, but also hit eighth and sixth once.
Rafaela's fantasy outlook isn't the best from the No. 9 spot, but he's making it work of late. I prefer to only add him in deeper leagues as long as he's mostly hitting ninth though.
He's a good keeper in deeper leagues, and is close to being a daily starter. Rafaela should definitely be started now in deeper setups.
Rafaela can be added in standard leagues for the time being, but it'd only be a short-term pickup most likely. There's better fantasy outfielders out there. If you just need short-term help though, Rafaela is a good option.
Should You Add Brandon Woodruff?
Woodruff is rostered in 81.8% of leagues after a 4.39% increase.
He made his season debut on Sunday against the Marlins. Woodruff got the win after striking out eight batters over six strong innings. He allowed a run on two hits and no walks, and needed just 70 pitches to get through his outing.
It was Woodruff's first appearance since the end of the 2023 season, and he looked like his old self. Miami had been a hot lineup of late, so to hold them down was a good first start for Woody.
Woodruff isn't your typical fantasy baseball waiver wire option. He has the potential to be an ace in real life, and it translates super well to fantasy baseball leagues. He might just be coming back, and he has injury concerns, but he's a top-end option when he's on the field, so he's a must-add player in my eyes.
He has a favorable matchup against the Nationals coming before the All-Star break, which is another reason to add Woodruff in all leagues. Scoop him up before it's too late.
