Peyton Gray | Fantasy Outlook

Peyton Gray flashes elite strikeout upside but remains a liability due to recent command struggles

Gray has been a high-strikeout force lately, posting a 15.95 K/9 over his last 30 days, although his 1.90 WHIP during that period reveals ongoing command issues. The first-place Rangers, currently sitting at 50-49, have leaned on Gray as a primary relief option following injuries to bullpen stalwarts Chris Martin and Robert Garcia. While a right wrist scare briefly limited him in May, he is currently healthy and serving in a high-leverage capacity.

Under the hood, Gray's current form is a tale of two extremes; while the strikeout volume is elite, his 22.50 ERA over the last 14 days is a massive regression from his season-long 4.21 ERA. Comparing this to his 1.44 career WHIP, our data suggests he is currently pitching in too much traffic to be effective, and his inability to limit base runners is negating his swing-and-miss stuff. Expect some positive regression toward his career baseline, but he remains a high-risk asset.

Texas plays six home games this week, starting with a three-game set against the first-place White Sox followed by three games against the Mariners. While our projection expects Gray to contribute nearly 16 strikeouts per nine innings across roughly two frames of work, his weekly 2.05 projected WHIP is high enough to damage fantasy ratios significantly. Until he stabilizes his control and limits the recent explosion of hits allowed, he should be left on the bench. Sit.
