More MLB Trade Deadline Deals: Fantasy Baseball Breakdowns for Holmes, Ramos and More

We covered a bunch of trades today, and have a few more to go over that happened over the past few hours.

Brewers Get Two Pitchers from Cardinals

Milwaukee and St. Louis made an inter-division trade, with the Brewers getting Dustin May and JoJo Romero in the deal, while sending out prospects Alexander Frias and Carson Ragsdale.

May is 28 years old and will already be joining his fourth MLB team. Across 21 starts with St. Louis this season, May is 5-7 with a 4.38 earned run average, although he's pitched better of late. May has covered 109 innings so far, striking out 106 along the way.

Milwaukee has been known to get the best out of pitchers, so we'll see if May can shine down the stretch. He's a better deep-league fantasy asset most times, but could emerge as a standard league asset if he excels in Milwaukee.

Romero is a late-inning relief option, but likely won't get any saves, so will top out as a deep-league fantasy asset. Romero has 43 strikeouts over 43 innings pitched this season, while sporting a 3.35 ERA. So he could have deep-league appeal, but that's probably the extent of his fantasy ceiling.

Frias was the Brewers' No. 11 prospect before the trade. The 18-year-old is in Single-A, has a 2029 ETA and has looked great across two levels this season. We'll see if he can keep trending up with his new team, but he's a good dynasty stash at this point.

Ragsdale was Milwaukee's No. 13 prospect. He also has excelled this season between two levels of play, but is in Double-A now. Ragsdale is 22 years old and has a 2028 ETA. He's another prospect to keep tabs on, but not quite as promising as Frias is.

Cubs Land Three Pitchers, Plus an Outfielder

Chicago acquired Braxton Garrett from Miami, sending out Jonathon Long and Jace Beck. The Cubs also got Ryan Zeferjahn from the Angels, while shipping out Moises Ballesteros and Mason McGwire. In a third deal, Chicago got Clay Holmes and Tyrone Taylor from the Mets in exchange for Jefferson Rojas.

Holmes hasn't made a big league start since May 15 because of an injury, but he adds a big rotation piece for Chicago. Across nine starts this year, Holmes was 4-4 with a 2.39 ERA and 45 punchouts over 52 2/3 innings.

He's due back soon, so now is a great time to add Holmes in your fantasy leagues. Holmes gets a fantasy boost from the trade, and could be a good fantasy asset down the stretch, so add him before it's too late.

Taylor has appeared in just 67 games, and he has a .241 average and .290 OBP. He's a depth outfield option for the Cubs, so don't expect him to be more than a deep-league fantasy asset.

Garrett has appeared in just two games so far this season. He has a career 4.16 ERA over his six-year career, and gives the Cubs a starter for the stretch run. 

His fantasy outlook improves from the trade, and he could gain some fantasy attention as a result. Garrett is just a deep-league fantasy asset right now, but could work into all leagues if he excels with his new club.

Zeferjahn is a bullpen option for Chicago, and with the injuries the team is dealing with, there's a chance he gets a chance at some saves maybe. He has four saves this season, plus a 3.66 ERA, so there's at least some deep-league appeal with him.

Long was the Cubs' No. 10 prospect before the trade. He is 24 years old, has a 2026 ETA and has been playing in Triple-A. Now with a clearer path to the big leagues, Long has a chance to be a fantasy asset yet in 2026, while still being a solid long-term option.

Beck ranked 28th for the Cubs. He is 26 years old, has a 2027 ETA and has also been playing in Triple-A. Beck has a chance to now appear in the big leagues this season, so he's another to keep tabs on, while not being a huge dynasty asset at an advanced age already.

Ballesteros was a highly-regarded prospect coming up, but hasn't been able to figure out big league pitching consistently enough. Now on a worse team, he has a chance to stick in the big leagues, and that makes him a fantasy asset to keep tabs on.

McGwire was the Cubs' No. 18 prospect before the trade. The son of Mark McGwire is 22 years old, has a 2028 ETA and was pitching in High-A. He's on the rise as a prospect, so we'll see if he keeps trending that way with LA.

Rojas is the No. 63 prospect in all of baseball, so that's a decent return for those two big leaguers. The 21-year-old has a 2027 ETA and has been playing in Double-A. The trade doesn't alter his long-term outlook very much, but him being able to play a couple infield spots helps his cause.

Yankees Add Ramos

Heliot Ramos was traded from the Giants to the Yankees in exchange for Henry Lalane and Kaeden Kent.

Ramos gives the Yankees another outfield option as they continue to deal with injuries to Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton. He should play enough to have some fantasy value, at least in deeper leagues.

Ramos has a .264 average and .304 OBP across 74 games this season. He had 20+ homers in each of the past two seasons and adds some thump to the Yankee lineup again.

Lalane was the Yankees' No. 5 prospect before the trade. He's 22 years old, has a 2028 ETA and has been pitching in High-A. Lalane has looked good over the past couple years, so hopefully he keeps rising with his new team.

Kent was the Yankees' No. 13 prospect. He's 22 years old, has a 2028 ETA and had been playing in High-A. The shortstop is enjoying a breakout year, so we'll see if he can keep trending up in San Fran. 

Varsho and Arrighetti Swapped

Toronto sent Daulton Varsho to Houston in exchange for Spencer Arrighetti.

Varsho is 30 years old and has a .243 average and .307 OBP over 88 games and 265 plate appearances this season. He adds another outfield option for Houston.

Varsho should play daily, which gives him some fantasy upside there. We'll see if the change of scenery can help him out, but he's likely to top out as a deep-league asset.

Arrighetti has started 17 games this season, and 52 of his 53 total appearances since debuting in 2024. He has 87 strikeouts over 88 innings this season.

He will be another pitching option for Toronto after coming off the 15-day injured list. Arrighetti has deep-league appeal, and could be a standard league option in the right matchups, or if he excels with his new team.
