Steven Matz begins rehab assignment as he works to rejoin the first-place Rays rotation

Matz is currently sidelined on the 15-day injured list with a left ankle sprain, a setback that followed an earlier stint for elbow inflammation. The 35-year-old veteran recently began a rehab assignment to build back his stamina for a first-place Tampa Bay squad that leads the AL East with a 56-38 record. With the Rays' rotation depth tested by several injuries, his eventual return will be vital for their pitching staff once he proves his health in the minors.

Before the ankle injury, Matz struggled significantly, posting a 10.38 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP over a brief three-game stretch. These inflated numbers are a far cry from our season projection of a 4.04 ERA and 1.26 WHIP, which aligns more closely with his career baseline. Given his age and recent inconsistency, fantasy managers should expect a period of rust upon his return and a likely regression toward a league-average mid-rotation profile rather than elite production.

The Rays have four games scheduled against the Red Sox this week, but Matz will not be a part of the active roster as he continues his recovery. He has zero projected innings for the current scoring period, and our data indicates he still requires more time in the minor leagues to regain his form. Keep him in an IL spot for now, as he is not a viable option for your active lineup this week. Sit.
