Steven Matz | Fantasy Outlook

Steven Matz shifts to long relief amid ongoing ratio troubles for the first-place Rays

Matz has struggled mightily on the mound of late, yielding seven earned runs across just 3.3 innings over his last 14 days (19.09 ERA). Operating primarily as a long reliever and spot opener for the first-place Rays (77-53), the veteran left-hander has been unable to lock down a permanent rotation role following mid-season elbow and ankle ailments.

Through 63.1 frames in 2026, Matz carries a bloated 6.42 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, falling well short of our rest-of-season projection of a 4.04 ERA. His strikeout rate has dropped to a modest 6.99 K/9, and with his reduced bullpen workload offering virtually no win or strikeout upside, this suppression in fantasy value is real rather than bad luck.

The Rays head to Detroit before returning home to face San Diego this week, but Matz is not slated for any starts as Tampa Bay turns to Drew Rasmussen, Ian Seymour, and Freddy Peralta. With our models projecting zero fantasy points and no rotation turns on the docket, he should remain far away from active lineups. Sit.
