Seth Jones - Florida Panthers
Jones is a massive piece of Florida's blue line, and any absence, even short term, matters for both the Panthers and fantasy managers. He left Friday's Winter Classic against the New York Rangers early with an upper-body injury and did not return, which immediately puts him into day-to-day territory. He played just three minutes of ice time in that game before leaving.
Florida leans heavily on Jones in all situations, and if they want to stay firmly in the championship conversation, they'll need him healthy down the stretch.
From a fantasy standpoint, this is a classic monitor closely situation. Jones logs big minutes, contributes across categories, and plays a meaningful role on the top powerplay, so even a brief absence creates a ripple effect.
If he misses time, Jeff Petry is the most obvious beneficiary in terms of powerplay usage and short-term value, particularly in deeper leagues or formats that reward defense scoring. For now, Jones should be held everywhere, but managers need to be ready with a contingency plan if the Panthers decide to exercise caution.
Jones has six goals, 18 assists, and 13 powerplay points in 40 games played as a defenseman. He also has 78 shots on goal, 38 hits, and 47 blocked shots.
Jack Eichel - Vegas Golden Knights
Eichel's return is a major boost for the Golden Knights, as so much of their offense runs directly through him when he's in the lineup. He last suited up on December 13 and missed seven games, but he'll step right back into his familiar role at the center of Vegas' attack, skating on the top line between Ivan Barbashev and Mitch Marner while reclaiming his spot on the top powerplay unit.
From a usage standpoint, there's no ramp up period here. Eichel is immediately being trusted with top line minutes and prime offensive deployment, which should stabilize Vegas' scoring and lift the fantasy value of his linemates. Anytime Eichel is healthy and driving play, the Golden Knights' offense looks more structured and dangerous, especially with him on the powerplay. His return should boost Marner's production as well, as he relies on other talent to keep his engine going, too.
For fantasy managers, this is an automatic activate, but with a clear monitoring note attached. Eichel has a well-documented injury history and has already missed multiple stretches this season, so while the upside remains elite, durability continues to be the variable. Managers should enjoy the production but stay attentive to lineup news and potential maintenance days as the schedule continues to tighten.
Eichel has 12 goals, 29 assists, and 16 powerplay points in 32 games played as a forward. He also has 120 shots on goal, 18 hits, and 23 blocked shots.
Marco Rossi - Vancouver Canucks
Rossi's latest injury is another frustrating setback for a forward who has been fighting to solidify his place with a new organization. After coming over from the Minnesota Wild in search of a fresh start, this is the kind of bad luck that can stall momentum, especially for a player still trying to establish consistency at the NHL level. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time Rossi has dealt with injury issues this season, and the interruptions continue to add up.
The hope in Vancouver was that a change of scenery and a bit more patience would allow Rossi's offensive game to surface more regularly. While he does have a longer leash with the Canucks than he did in Minnesota, the results have remained uneven, and the projected offensive upside still hasn't fully translated. Injuries are a likely contributing factor, but availability has become part of the evaluation at this point.
From a fantasy perspective, Rossi is trending into a hold only category in most formats. The upside is still there, particularly in deeper leagues where opportunity and pedigree matter, but frequent injuries make him difficult to trust on a night-to-night basis. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his health closely, but until he can string together consistent games and production, expectations need to stay tempered.
Rossi has five goals, 10 assists, and five powerplay points in 25 games played as a forward. He also has 36 shots on goal, 16 hits, and 20 blocked shots.
Mackenzie Blackwood - Colorado Avalanche
This is another setback for Blackwood, marking his second injury of the season and landing him back on injured reserve. While his overall results have been strong and he's only lost one start all year, circumstances have shifted around him. What was expected to be a clear cut starting role in Colorado has instead turned into a split situation, with Scott Wedgewood playing his way into a significant share of the workload.
It's important to note that Blackwood hasn't played himself out of the net. His numbers have been excellent, and when he's been available, he's delivered wins behind the best team in the league. However, missing time to start the season, followed by Wedgewood's outstanding play, has cost Blackwood ground, and this latest injury only complicates his grip on the crease. Even when he returns, the path back to a true starter's workload is no longer guaranteed.
From a fantasy perspective, Blackwood remains a hold in all leagues due to the win potential tied to Colorado's dominance, but managers need to adjust expectations. He has clearly lost starts, and his injury history now needs to be monitored closely.
This is excellent news for Wedgewood managers, as he should handle the full workload until Blackwood returns. There's no concrete timeline available, but the lack of concerning updates is generally positive, and a return within a week or two feels like a reasonable expectation.
Blackwood has 13 wins in 14 games started as a goaltender. He also has a .924 save percentage, 2.07 goals against average, and two shutouts.
Ilya Sorokin - New York Islanders
Sorokin returned from a lower-body injury after being activated off injured reserve Friday and served as the backup to David Rittich on Saturday against the Maple Leafs. The Islanders had previously described the absence as a “small nagging issue,” and the forward looking rest over the holiday break allowed Sorokin to address it without risking long-term complications. With the break now behind him, he's ready to resume his role as New York's starter.
For fantasy managers, Sorokin's return is significant. He's the kind of workhorse netminder who takes on the majority of the workload in Long Island and has historically delivered strong numbers when healthy. His presence immediately stabilizes the crease situation and returns predictability for both wins and saves, which is a premium in fantasy formats.
This is an immediate activate situation. Sorokin is slated to start the Islanders' next game, giving owners the first real chance to reap the rewards of his return. Given his track record and the team's confidence in him, he should quickly resume his role as one of the league's more reliable fantasy goaltenders, making him a key asset to monitor as matchups and usage continue to develop.
Sorokin has 12 wins in 24 games started as a goaltender. He also has a .910 save percentage, 2.55 goals against average, and three shutouts.
