Fantasy Baseball Droppables: 5 Players to Consider Cutting Now

Spencer Jones - New York Yankees

Jones is sitting at 45% rostered right now. He was at 53% on May 9.

Jones was called up to the big leagues near the end of last week. He was pretty highly regarded, despite not being a top-100 prospect anymore.

In his first four games, Jones has one hit, a single. He has an RBI, no runs scored, one walk and six strikeouts over 12 plate appearances.

Jones is playing daily, but not delivering enough at the plate right away. It's very early in his career, and I believe in him in the long run. I still think he's droppable in some leagues, at least until his bat gets rolling.

Only roster him in deeper leagues for now. Keep tabs on him for when he breaks out, and be ready to add him in all deeper leagues, and some standard leagues too.

Ildemaro Vargas - Arizona Diamondbacks

Vargas sits at 88% owned at the moment. He's been over 90% this season.

Vargas is hitless over his past two contests, and has slowed since a red-hot start to the season. He still has a .331 average and .356 on-base percentage over 33 games and 137 plate appearances, which shows just how good he was early on.

Over his 43 hits, Vargas has seven doubles, six homers and two triples. He has added 24 RBIs, 21 runs scored, a stolen base, five walks and 15 strikeouts.

There's still a lot of good in those stats, but with his production tailing off a bit of late, fantasy owners are starting to drop him in a few leagues. I still like rostering him in a lot of standard leagues, especially because he's likely eligible at several spots.

Keep close tabs on Vargas and be ready to move off him if his bat cools off more. Regression was due to come, but we'll have to see if Vargas can still do enough for fantasy relevance in a good amount of leagues.

Jeremiah Jackson - Baltimore Orioles

Jackson is owned in 38% of leagues at this time. He was near 80% in late April, and has steadily been dropping since April 26.

He has two hits over his past six contests, despite starting five of those contests. Jackson has just three strikeouts in that span, but he's just not producing enough.

Over 39 games and 131 plate appearances, Jackson has a .246 average and .267 OBP now. He has six homers and three doubles among his 31 total knocks, plus 24 RBIs, 10 runs scored, a stolen base, three walks and 29 strikeouts.

He too might be eligible at a couple positions, which makes me more willing to hold him. Jackson was due to regress from a solid start, and it appears to be happening now. With Jackson Holliday on the mend, Jackson could be out of a starting spot in a bit.

He's still worth trying in deeper leagues until Holliday is back in the picture. Be keeping close tabs on Jackson though, as he needs to heat back up at the plate to be worth holding in deeper leagues.

Ryan Walker - San Francisco Giants

Walker is down to 24% rostered. He was over 60% a month ago, but now isn't even in the big leagues.

Walker was demoted to Triple-A on Sunday after a rough go of things of late. He's allowed at least one run in four straight appearances.

In 16 games overall, Walker is 0-1 with three saves, three blown saves and two holds. He's allowed 12 runs (11 earned) on 19 hits and 10 walks, while striking out 14 batters over 15 1/3 innings.

Walker will try to get right in the minor leagues before attempting to get back in the big leagues. He's not worth rostering in redraft fantasy leagues in the meantime. He's worth keeping tabs on after he gets back in the big leagues, as he's been a decent fantasy reliever in the past - we'll see if he can ever get back to that level.

Payton Tolle - Boston Red Sox

Tolle is rostered in 77% of leagues right now. He was over 80% for his last start, but is now being dropped at a decent clip.

Tolle just made his fourth start of the season on Sunday, allowing three runs on seven hits over five innings. He struck out four and walked none in that outing.

Over his appearances, he's 1-2 with a 2.78 earned run average over 22 2/3 innings pitched. He's allowed nine runs (seven earned) on 14 hits and six walks. Tolle has 27 strikeouts to his name.

The young hurler has pitched pretty well of late. Some shorter starts are something to note, and hold him back from being a must-own fantasy asset in standard leagues, at least for now. Stream him in standard leagues, while holding him in deeper leagues. We'll see if he can ever get to 100% ownership.
