Wednesday's Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Adds: Caleb Durbin, Brendan Donovan and More
Looking at a few waiver wire pitchers and hitters to consider adding in fantasy baseball leagues.
Let's go over a third round of fantasy baseball waiver wire options for the week!
We won't cover anyone who appeared in stories on Monday or Tuesday, and will also skip anyone who appeared in Wednesday's starting pitcher streaming article.
More waiver wire options can also be found on FantasySP.
Should You Add Caleb Durbin?
Durbin has been added in 4.25% of leagues, bringing his overall mark up to 38.22%.
Durbin has three straight games with two hits. He is also riding a six-game hitting streak and has 10 hits over that span. Durbin has two doubles and a homer among the hits, along with three RBIs, six runs scored, three stolen bases and walks and just one strikeout.
He's enjoyed a nice first season with the Brewers. This is his first season in the big leagues.
So far, he's played in 126 games and logged 464 plate appearances. Durbin has a .264 average and .338 on-base percentage. He has 24 doubles and 11 homers among his 108 total hits, along with 50 RBIs, 58 runs scored, 16 stolen bases, 28 walks and 46 strikeouts.
There's some solid numbers in those totals, and it makes him a bit better fantasy option than it might originally seem. The primary third baseman usually hits between sixth-eighth in the lineup. That's not a super favorable spot, but with the Brewers enjoying the success they have this season, it's also not quite as bad as it would be for a poor offense or on a bad team.
I know most fantasy owners don't love to roster players lacking power, but Durbin really is a solid fantasy asset. He has a solid average and OBP, and his lack of strikeouts and stolen base totals help him offset some lower power numbers.
I've liked him as a deep-league asset most of the season, and I'd definitely be streaming him now. At least utilize him until his bat cools off. You really could be considering him in standard leagues too, but not many will add him because of his lack of power.
Should You Add Brendan Donovan?
Donovan is up 3.88% and sits at 72.67% overall.
Donovan was activated off the injured list on September 12, and he's collected six hits over the four games since then. He has a homer and double among the knocks, along with two RBIs, three runs scored, a walk and two strikeouts.
In 114 games and over 496 plate appearances on the year, Donovan has a .281 average and .348 OBP, along with 47 RBIs, 60 runs scored, three stolen bases, 41 walks and 65 strikeouts. He has 26 doubles and 10 homers among his 124 total hits.
Something that works in Donovan's favor is that he should be eligible to play at a few fantasy positions. He's played second base, shortstop and left field this season, and third base, second base and right field in the past, so it's worth looking into where he's eligible. The more positions, the better.
Donovan is a good fantasy hitter, and him just coming off the injured list makes him available in way more leagues than he should be. If your fantasy team is still alive and kicking, then adding Donovan should be a no-brainer move.
Should You Add Ernie Clement?
Clement is rostered in 48.67% of leagues after a 3.45% increase.
Clement has six hits and a walk during a five-game on-base streak. He has two doubles among the hits, plus four RBIs, six runs scored and just two strikeouts in that span.
He has a .277 average and .313 OBP over 146 games and 550 plate appearances this season. Clement has 141 total hits, including 31 doubles, nine homers and two triples. He also has 46 RBIs, 77 runs scored, five stolen bases, 25 walks and 60 strikeouts.
Like Donovan, Clement plays all over the field, which boosts his fantasy stock. He's played first, second and third base, plus shortstop this season. Clement has played a little outfield in the past too, so he could have eligibility there for some of you.
And like Durbin, Clement is hitting in the bottom third of the Blue Jays' order most nights. Again though, with Toronto playing well and the lineup being a pretty good one, Clement's fantasy outlook is still pretty solid from lower in the order.
I've thought Clement was at least a good deep-league depth option for most of the season. Right now, he's definitely worth having, because his versatility gives you a starting option all over the infield, at least, if a regular starter is out.
Streaming him in standard leagues makes some sense in some cases too. He's not a big-time fantasy hitter, but he does enough and doesn't put up many negative numbers, so he's probably worth a few roster slots in standard setups.
Look into your lineup a bit deeper and see if Clement could be worth an add.
Should You Add Justin Verlander?
Verlander has been added in 5.85% of leagues as he gets ready for a start. He's owned in 52% of leagues overall.
Verlander will make an afternoon start against the Diamondbacks today. He faced them back on May 12, taking a loss despite allowing just two runs over six innings. Verlander gave up nine hits and one walk, while striking out five.
He has a 3.94 earned run average over 26 appearances and 134 2/3 innings this year. Verlander has a 3-10 record, but the ERA is respectable. He's allowed 66 runs (59 earned) on 138 hits and 47 walks, while striking out 124 batters.
Verlander still has a little gas in the tank, and he's pitched well of late. Over his past four starts, he's 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA. In 24 innings, he's allowed three runs on 17 hits and 10 walks, while punching out 25 batters.
With his big name and recent surge, Verlander is going to be a streaming add in most matchups. Arizona's offense is still capable of going off any day, but after trading away so much talent at the trade deadline, it's not as consistent.
I'm good with streaming Verlander in any league today. He's a better deep-league asset, but I'd be happy to utilize him in a standard league as well.
Look over your options and see how well Verlander stacks up against other streaming assets.
Should You Add Lucas Giolito?
Giolito is up 5.09% as he prepares for a start as well. He's rostered in 80.25% of leagues now.
He will make a Wednesday start against the Athletics. Giolito has not faced them yet this season.
By his own percentage, you should know that Giolito is a pretty good fantasy asset. In 24 appearances and over 136 innings this season, Giolito has a 3.31 ERA. He's allowed 57 runs (50 earned) on 123 hits and 47 walks, while striking out 113 batters. Giolito is 10-4 as well.
He's allowed three or fewer earned runs in six straight starts. Giolito is 2-2 with a 2.02 ERA over that span. He's allowed 11 runs (eight earned) on 31 hits and 14 walks, while striking out 31 batters.
The Athletics are a so-so matchup on paper. I wouldn't fear them with a pitcher who has been as good as Giolito has.
If he's somehow available in a deeper league, he's an automatic add and start. He could be available in your standard league, and if he is, I'd be happy to start him today. It's not the best matchup for him, but he's pitched well enough to use against most lineups, including this one.
