Should You Add Brandon Sproat?
Sproat is up 7.14% today and sits at 18.13% overall.
He's getting called up to the big leagues for his MLB debut. He'll start Sunday against the Reds.
Sproat isn't a top-100 prospect, but is the Mets' No. 5 prospect. The 24-year-old righty is 6-foot-3 and weighs 215 pounds. Sproat was drafted 56th overall in the 2023 draft.
In two minor league seasons, he's covered 237 1/3 innings over 48 starts and 50 total appearances. Sproat is 15-10 with a 3.83 earned run average.
He has 244 strikeouts and just 95 walks in his time in the minor leagues. Sproat has allowed a .214 average against him. Seeing why he's on the rise after the news of his call up?
Sproat is a talented and highly-regarded prospect, and his matchup on Sunday will be pretty favorable. He's going to be owned in a lot more leagues by the time he actually starts on Sunday.
He's capable of working deep into the game, and with solid strikeout numbers, could deliver a big fantasy score, especially if he allows three or less runs.
I'm for adding Sproat in all deeper leagues for his Sunday start. If he looks good in that one, he could immediately be added in standard leagues, so if you are hoping to add him, don't wait too long.
Should You Add Javier Assad?
Assad has been added in 5.6% of leagues, bringing his overall mark to 19.89%.
He'll make an afternoon start against the Nationals today. It will be his first appearance against them this season.
Assad has only made four starts overall, going 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA over 20 innings. He's allowed nine runs on 22 hits and five walks, while striking out just 10 batters.
He's coming off a win against the Rockies on August 30. He allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out just one over six innings.
Assad worked six scoreless innings against the Angels in the start before that. He's topped out at 80 pitches, so he's a bit limited in that regard. His strikeout numbers are also low, so there's a few things working about him going into Friday's start.
The matchup is really good though, and that's why he's on the rise. I see a decent, but low, fantasy floor, and a solid, but again low, fantasy ceiling.
I'm fine giving Assad some deep-league starts today, but I'd stop there. I don't think he's a very good standard league streaming asset. There has to be better options out there for you.
Should You Add Daulton Varsho?
Varsho is rostered in 22% of fantasy leagues right now. He was at 18% on September 3.
He has five hits over his past three contests, including a homer in each game. Varsho has four RBIs, five runs scored, two walks and four strikeouts in that small span.
Varsho has only played in 51 games and gotten 197 plate appearances for the season. He's hitting .239, which is actually above his .226 career average. With more games, that could drop. Varsho's on-base percentage is .294, which is near his .297 career mark.
Varsho has 18 home runs, nine doubles and a triple among his 42 total hits this season. He also has 46 RBIs, 31 runs scored, a stolen base, 15 walks and 58 strikeouts.
He really is having a good season at the plate. A full season at a similar pace would have him rostered in way more leagues.
For now, I like the idea of adding the outfielder in deeper leagues. He's a big-time power threat, and is hot at the plate right now, so he's at least worth streaming until he cools off.
There's a chance he stays hot for a bit and works into standard leagues. He's a player to keep an eye on in case that ends up happening.
Should You Add Austin Wells?
Wells is up 3.3% and is now rostered in 42.31% of leagues overall.
He went hitless on Thursday, but walked twice and scored two runs to still provide some fantasy value. Wells had three hits in the game before that.
Over his past seven games and 25 plate appearances, Wells has three homers and doubles among his eight total knocks. He also has five RBIs, seven runs scored, three walks and seven strikeouts.
It's been a disappointing season for him overall. Wells has a .215 average and .274 OBP over 109 contests and 295 plate appearances. He has 20 homers, 19 doubles and a triple among his 76 total hits, along with 63 RBIs, 47 runs scored, five stolen bases, 27 walks and 99 punchouts.
Wells has started four of the team's past five games, hitting between sixth-ninth each game. He hit ninth against a left-handed pitcher, and sixth or seventh against righties - he sat against one lefty.
The Yankees' lineup is stacked, so anyone in it could be a decent fantasy asset any given day. The most important thing is that Wells is starting regularly now, and he's delivering at the plate.
As long as he's doing those couple things, his fantasy value is up. I see him as a bit overowned right now - a lot of that has to do with him being a Yankee. He's still worth some ownership in some deeper leagues though.
Only being eligible at catcher though caps his fantasy value a bit. I'd think there are better long-term options in standard leagues. If Wells keeps delivering at the plate, the discussion could change, but for now, everyone should at least keep an eye on him.
Should You Add Jose Soriano?
Soriano is up 5.49% and is owned in 65.38% of leagues overall.
He's another streaming option for Friday. Soriano will make a start against the Athletics tonight. It will be the fourth time he's faced them this season.
In the first start against the Athletics back on May 19, Soriano earned a win after pitching six innings. He allowed three runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out four.
Soriano struck out 12 batters in a no decision on June 10. He worked seven innings, allowing a run on two hits and two walks.
He took another no decision on August 17 against the Athletics. Soriano gave up five runs on eight hits and a walk over 5 2/3 innings, while striking out five.
So there's two good/average starts in there and then a below-average one. It's a pretty solid matchup to try to take advantage of.
Since that last start against the Athletics, Soriano has worked 12 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just five hits and four walks along the way. He has 14 strikeouts over those two starts.
So considering his past starts against the Athletics and then how he's looked his past two appearances, I'm a fan of Soriano on Friday.
He has a decent floor and a surprisingly good fantasy ceiling. I'd be expecting average-or-better results from him tonight.
With all that said, I'd want to start him in all deeper leagues - add him and stream him if he's available in your deeper league.
I'm also good with streaming him in some standard leagues tonight. He's not a must-start pitcher, but he's probably deserving of more ownership and starts tonight. Look over your options and see if Soriano is worth streaming.
