Grant Holmes, Atlanta Braves vs. Miami Marlins
Miami ranks in the bottom three in runs scored, doubles, home runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS. They have drawn 27 fewer walks than the next closest team. There’s no power, no consistency, and seemingly no hope for this Marlins team.
Holmes has made 11 appearances, and his last time out was his first start in the big leagues: He allowed just one run in five innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. Holmes did good strikeout work in the minors, so there’s reason to think that can continue. The only real downside is a likely short start given his usual role as a reliever.
Holmes is a mid-level streamer with upside. It’s hard to project too much with a guy who hasn’t thrown much at this level, but underlying factors are in his favor, and the matchup couldn’t be much better.
Jordan Montgomery, Arizona Diamondbacks @ Pittsburgh Pirates
Pittsburgh is fighting for a playoff spot, but that says more about the state of the National League than their actual talent level. They are much closer to the Marlins offensively than they are to playing above-average baseball. Pittsburgh is in the bottom 10 across most offensive stats.
Montgomery’s rough season is a bit of a surprise after he starred in the postseason and late in the season for the Rangers last year. His strikeout rate is most concerning: After not falling below 21% in any season in which he threw at least 30 innings, Montgomery is at 14.2% this season through 74.2 innings. That severely lowers his ceiling.
Montgomery is a low- to mid-level streamer. The matchup helps, but Montgomery hasn’t shown the same magic that made him successful previously in his career.
Martin Perez, San Diego Padres vs. Colorado Rockies
Perez was acquired from the Pirates at the deadline as the Padres were looking for a starter in the final hours. They upgraded the bullpen more than the rotation, but Perez can help eat up innings on the way to the playoffs and work as a lefty out of the bullpen once the postseason hits. He is middling, but he can throw major league innings.
In games away from home, the Rockies are in the bottom five in runs scored and all four slash categories. Their batters have struck out the most away from home also, which might not seem like it would be affected by location, but studies have shown that breaking pitches have much less movement a mile above sea level, making it easier for hitters.
Perez is a mid-level streamer. He’s fine, but the matchup makes the man in this one.
David Peterson, New York Mets @ Los Angeles Angels
Things have been bad for the Angels over the past year or so. They chose to hang on to Shohei Ohtani at the 2023 trade deadline despite increasing odds that he would leave in free agency. Not only did he leave to go across town with the Dodgers, but LA also traded prospects to make a run at the end of 2023, a series of moves that didn’t improve anything. Now, Mike Trout is out for the year AGAIN, and the team doesn’t have much future value in the minors.
After starting the season on the IL, Peterson hasn’t found his groove yet. He is walking 11% of the batters he faces (his career rate is over 10%) but hasn’t offset those issues with strikeouts the way he has in past seasons, sitting several percentage points below the league average. That leaves him as a middling hurler susceptible to big innings when he puts guys on base.
Peterson is another low- to mid-level streamer. His performance has been uneven, but the Angels put him on the streaming radar.
