Stephen Kolek to miss the remainder of 2026 due to season-ending elbow surgery

Stephen Kolek has not taken the mound recently and is officially shut down for the fifth-place Royals, who currently sit at 49-73 on a four-game losing streak. After initially landing on the injured list with a right flexor strain, Kolek was shifted to the 60-day IL and is slated to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery. His absence further depletes a Kansas City rotation already navigating multiple pitching injuries.

Before the injury derailed his campaign, the 29-year-old right-hander delivered a 4.62 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP across 10 starts, including five quality starts and a memorable complete-game shutout against Seattle. While his modest strikeout total limited his upside, he provided serviceable mid-rotation depth when active. With surgery confirmed, our models project no further innings or counting stats for the remainder of the season.

Kansas City wraps up the week with a road series in Anaheim against the Angels, turning to Seth Lugo, Randy Dobnak, and Noah Cameron on the mound. With Kolek sidelined for the remainder of the year and zero projected starts, he holds no utility for fantasy managers. Drop.
